Backup strategy onsite/offsite

Hi,

I need to figure out a back-up strategy for 6 TB of data. Docs/Media/Work.

Currently, I'm back-up up to external hard drives but this only covers me for onsite backup, plus, is a real pain to figure out what is on each disc.

Ideally, I'd live to have the data in the cloud as well backed up on premise.

Any idea if cloud backup of this size is practical? I was looking at CrashPlan, has anyone experienced loading this much to them?

Also, is there a better way I can backup on site? Software/Media wise.

I'd appreciate any help.

Cloud : Amazon S3, if they are available in UK ,

Now if you want to use external disk, Why not use Goodsync, it's sync the contain of your PC on the external disk, so even if you alternate 2 or 3 disks, the same contain will be on each disk, and it's directly available, it'S means you just plug the external disk to any PC, and without install any software, you can go get the file you want. I have few customer who use it, I sell them a external 2.5 usb enclosure with a laptop disk inside

something like this

Newegg.ca - Vantec NexStar TX 2.5" SATA to USB 2.0 External Hard Drive/SSD Enclosure - Model NST-210S2-BK

here Goodsync

GoodSync: File Synchronization Software, File Backup, File Sync

S3 works out at over £400/month !

Also - goodsynch won't for me as my back-up is 6TB and won't fit on a single disk.

There are a number of cloud backup solutions out there, however there are some issues:

  1. It could take months for the backup to fully complete, you would be vulnerable until the full backup was done.
  2. Obviously, it would take months to restore all the data as well.. some services offer a service where they will send you a hard drive with your backup should you need to restore the full thing, but that could take several days.
  3. Some services charge by the Gigabyte, so that could get expensive. Others are all you can eat (like Carbonite).

One option, if you have a friend who would be willing.. is to put a server in your friends house and create a VPN between them. You could then install Windows Server 2012 Essentials and use it's backup system to backup to that server. You could do the full backup locally, then move the server to their house after the fact.

The three most common unlimited backup systems are Backblaze, Carbonite, and CrashPlan.
