Losing programs

I currently have Windows Vista on my computer and I need Windows 8 for school, but I read that when you upgrade from Vista to 8, you loose your programs. I don't have an external hard drive to copy my things to avoid loosing them, but I have 2 hard drive on my computer. If everything is on my C:, will I loose my thing if I copy them all on my D: before I do the upgrade?

Thanks for your answer and sorry for my potentially bad english (I'm francophone :p)

If you do an upgrade install then you will not lose programs or data, though some programs may no longer work with Windows 8.
If you do a Clean Install then everything will be gone and you will have to start over. You really can't save programs, you have to reinstall them as there are to many places that programs put things, like the registry and data areas (AppData, Programdata, etc.)
