There have been a lot of questions about how to boot directly into desktop and avoid Metro. My question is just the opposite. When I'm in Metro and I open an app, it first brings up the desktop and then the app on top of it. I would like to open an app without opening desktop. Is there a way?

No , the apps who behave like this are Desktop Apps.

I have a similar query. Is there a way to set say a timeout? Say I leave in on the desktop unattended for 10 min. Then have it return to metro?

I have a feeling a batch script and adding a task might do that....

Wait, I must be REALLY overthinking this, because it feels like you're asking if you're in the Start Screen and open a Desktop app, you don't want it to open the Desktop right away?

It sounds like he wants desktop apps to behave like Metro apps and launch full-screen (never showing the desktop) right from the Start screen.

I solve that bit of Windows schizophrenia by not launching desktop apps from the Metro UI... I don't see the point. To me the desktop and the Metro/Modern UI are separate workspaces with separate, distinct functions.
