There are different opinions on Windows 8 present and future success.

EightForums is the biggest forum for Windows 8.
After 2 weeks of official Windows 8 launch to general public we see a decline in visits to the forum and the most visited Windows forum is still SevenForums.

Will Windows 7 dominate the PC market for at least one to two years from now ?
There are also many people still using XP who are not willing to change OS.

Big organizations will move eventually later but this move will be not sooner than one to two years from now.

And if there are not enough customers for Windows 8 in the next few months all the effort bringing
Windows 8 to public could create a financial disaster for Microsoft.

I am not sure Win8 will have success on tablets, phones and other smaller devices.
Android seems to dominate this market and many predict bright future for it.

So what ?
No good predictions for PC market, no future on tablets and phones, is it time to say bye, bye Microsoft ?

Note,,,some will accuse me to bashing again, but it is not, I use Microsoft product since 30 years, I always been a big supporter of them, not only with word but with money too, as I never accept to install a pirated MS Os in a customers PC, contrary to 80% of the competition around me.

But this time I agree Microsoft fail to deliver, this One fit all Device OS was death sentenced before even born. Will have been an easy fix, with all the resource MS have, it will have been easy to make a Desktop version without the charm menu and the hot corner for those who don't want go touchscreen. No Balmer and Sinofsky decide we will get use to it.

It'll take some time I think. It has only been out for three weeks, It took me at least 6 months to upgrade to 7. Once we get the buyers for the Holidays, and into next year when a Windows 7 PC can't be bought. I do think W7 will be around a long time, but I don't think W8 will completly flop. Many companies are still changing over to 7 and there are some folks that don't make a move on a new OS till after the first service pack is released. Android is going to be hard to catch simply because it is open source, and there are hundreds of hardware manufactuers making phone and tablets. I also think once the pro version of the surface comes out, it will change the game a bit. I mean an intel based tablet that can run regular desktop programs!! It'll be an IT dream, no more laptops to lug around. This is my opinion of course, so take it for what's it worth.

ah ah, you get it ... peoples will not get Windows 8 because they like it more, they will get it because it's the only choice they will have on large surface like Best Buy and Online Manufacturer like Dell

Oh yes, I know the game they are playing! soon it'll all be pushed to "the cloud" that's when I will go Linux with local storage only. I still have several unused 7 keys in case I get a system in to repair that the people hate 8. I am one that actually like the way 8 does things, but different strokes for different folks you know!?

Edit: I will say this though, I don't get upset with Ford because I can't buy a brand new 1966 mustang. So I don't see much point in being upset with MS for pushing people to their new product. For that matter, Windows is not the only OS, we cannot forget the Fruit company or Linux. If people get that upset about W8, they will seek other options.

. So I don't see much point in being upset with MS for pushing people to their new product.

let see it this way, you have a company with 8 computers, your employees is use to Windows 7 and Office 2010. They want to purchase a new PC in a year, no Windows 7 available, it's sucks to not have uniformity , I wonder if it's not something that can bring MS legally in trouble. A class action or even another step in from the Gov. I don't think morally, especially if you have the monopoly , you can remove a product from the market and impose something very different to your loyal customers. Think outside the box like Robot will say, MS is more than a simple product, this is use by mostly every business in the world . Why do you think they always delay the end of support of XP....

With the economy in US and Europe going so bad, I'm not sure it's the time to impose something to small companies that nearly survive.

That's just it, they are not a monopoly, there are options. You wouldn't get far in court at all.

As far as uniforimty goes, you are right, that sucks, but you can't expect everything to stay the same. It sucks and that is all that can be said. Stay with 7 or buy a copy from elsewhere or buy a used PC from CL or Ebay. There are just as many folks that like 8 as there are that don't. If you don't like it or want unifomity between work and home start planning now, cause it isn't going to change from this point on.

Buy a use pc on Ebay ? ...come one I sell only new PC to my customer, I'm not a scrap yard. I don't even upgrade old XP PCs to 7, I make them purchase new one, I don't make profit on the sale as they order them from Dell in 90% of the case. Old PC are not productive at all. Aside with customer is not what I like , it's what they like and are willing to pay for.

Well, I don't know what to tell you then. I upgrade or downgrade my customers if they want (like you said it is about them, not me). I will also spend a few hours with them to show them the changes and help them through the transition at no extra cost. I do it because the more informed they are, the better for everyone. They can handle stuff on their own and I get the referals. Plus if they need an upgrade or anything else, they know I won't BS them into buying something they don't need. I don't see the reason to force someone to buy a new PC simply because I don't want to tell them they have upgrade/downgrade and hardware options or do the work. Most of the people I do work for know that I won't tell them to buy a new PC or parts unless it is nessasary, and even then I go over options from used to cheap new or custom builds, depends on what they need it for. Old PC's are plenty productive for someone who checks e-mail, plays solitare and checks facebook. You said it yourself, times are tough. I even keep loner systems for them to borrow.

Look it's obvious you loath W8, good you have an opinion! I am not going to debate with you about opinions anymore, they are alot like @$^ holes, evryone has one and they all stink..

After 2 weeks of official Windows 8 launch to general public we see a decline in visits to the forum and the most visited Windows forum is still SevenForums.

I totally disagree. The metro UI , to me anyway, is completely sexy and incredible, and I totally favor it to the boring by comparison, windows 7 UI.

Maybe its the artist in me that loves the whole experience, but Im so glad Microsoft made Metro , but I think it appeals to others too because its so dynamic ;)

I wish I had a touch screen, as that would be pure nirvana, but I just have a 24" display.

I love how Windows 8 mirrors WP7, and now WP8, and I think its a simple matter that windows 8 is JUST NOW on the market, as is WP8.

People don't switch to a new OS, immediately ;)

I'ts new, just as one day a while ago, Apples new OS was new, and many were outraged!

I fell in love with WP7, being SO glad I could get away from those boring & outdated icons on android and apple, and I still use my WP7 and absolutely love it, always have, and I look fwd to getting a WP8 device ;)

I also think the new IE10 is awesome, in that it allows you to surf with entire screen, with all toolbars invisible, and a simple right click to bring up tabs, etc. I just love it. I love simplicity && function, and Microsoft nailed it! ;) SO many new features in windows 8, and Microsoft is doing a fantastic thing, offering win8 PRO SO cheaply atm. I see zero reason for complaints, as it just takes a little digging into how things work now, and it should be clear to anyone, that they are doing a masterful job of 'uniting' tablets, phones and desktops ;)

I as well like the new start screen (I hated it for a long time, but got used to it and find it much easier for what I use a PC for), My only complaint is that when I close an app it doesn't default back to it. I run dual screens so I have a fuctioning desktop on the other screen. I just wish it would default back to metro is all.

Anyway I just talk for the fun of it, I'm not on the payroll of MS, so I don't need to like all their products. I try to be as neutral as I can with Windows 8, I'm not blind , I see the annoyances and I refuse to say it's acceptable when I know they was forced to us.
I feel really sad, because I love computer, it's start in 1988 , since that time I loved about all the OS from any company. Windows 8 is not the only one with love and hate, if you look at Ubunty, the Unity don't make only happy users... where are our OS company are going ? Even Apple piddle off everyone with the way they change connector on their iPad and Phone. Lionel the toy train manufacturer, will introduce a docking base for control a train layout, I told them , this base wil not be compatible with new iPad release, I told them to develop also for other tablets.

Windows 8 will be slow out of the gate, largely because the full strategy in place for Windows 8 won't mature until more RT and 8 tablets hit the market, and Surface Pro hits and more Windows 8 Phones hit.

The combined app strategy will really pay off for those that buy into the complete ecosystem (much like people that own Mac's, iPad's and iPhones).

Further, as compelling apps are created, people will buy into it because they want to run those apps. The Xbox glass app is a great example of this starting.

Come back in a year and ask this same question.

As a system itself it's not badly done. There are definitely decisions they should have thought through. Visually they should have went with a middle ground like google or previous versions of zune desktop software so it wasn't overtly flat but instead more 2.5D. Overall they've made things difficult for desktop users. It's not impossible to learn but if they had made better decisions there wouldn't be much learning involved because it would be much more obvious.

@ area: No hard feelings here at all. I know what your saying, Unity pissed me off for awhile but like windows 8, I got used to it. Same with the Gnome 3 shell outrage. Once some updates came out and third party devs got to it, it's not bad at all. The thing is this is going to be how it is and all anyone can do is learn it, accept it and move on. You can find what moves you and works for you and go with that as well. There are options is all I am saying....

That is a cool little set up!! I would imagine they will develope for other platforms, they would be remiss to not. wouldn't be worth it to them not to. I imagine they put the i version out first, like most companied do.

let's not forget that Windows 7 was not adopted by corporate world too fast either, in my place I remember even with XP, peoples was saying they will wait to see if it's stable. But Windows 8 , peoples have other reasons this time to not switch to it, I have never see so much frustration about a new MS OS and this is not good.

The writing is on the wall , isn't it ? ;)

It's about TOUCH this, SWIPE that, and Microsoft was WiZE to see it, and focus on it.

This isn't rocket science people.

The new OS is sexy, vibrant , colorful and very useful and those who have the funds WILL get touch devices, trust me on that, it's obvious, fun, engaging and people love it. It's interactive, and people will adapt because of it. They have their tablets/phones on the go, and their touch device based PC's at home. It's IS the future. Like or not, but it IS the future ;) No btw, I do not work for Microsoft, I simply LOVE my WP7 device, threw android out the proverbial window when I got it ( Samsung 4" display) and never looked back for one second, and Im loving windows 8 PRo utterly and completely. Yes, there were things I got used to, but I loved the change , and Im sure other will follow, given some time. Rome was not built in a day, just ask Apple.

Windows 7 Is still there for the boring side of things, and for everyone else , for most people that just surf, read email, look at their pictures and listen to music on their PC'c/tablets etc. there wil be win8 . THIS IS wonderful.

While touch-screens are fine on a phone or tablet, they do NOT suit a desktop/big laptop.

Fortunately, Windows 8 is perfectly useable without it.

I'm using a mouse/keyboard, and have NO trouble doing everything I did in W7.

I have installed Classic Start, however, but do use the Start Screen as well.

They do actually complement one another....

No, I didn't like Win 8 at first, but I put that down to the fact that the DP was
rubbish to the point of unuseability, and Nvidia driver issues (since sorted).

All I want now, is a 3rd-party app to replace Aero. They had that just right
in the CP, and should have stopped there.

But nooooooo (apologies to Danny Kaye).

Most people here are system savvy but to the average CPU user if you change everything than there will be a slow curve to adjust to new ways (I'm in the group in some ways) So I don't see a big rush from any of my peers to switch over even when I tell them its cleaner and faster. i think we will see a slow progression as some others have stated if the Tablet and phone do well you will see the computer follow. And Business is always slow unless you give them big cost benefits. And New computer sales are way down so that will hold it back too. I have a 36" monitor so touch screen is not what I need on a PC, it's speed and easy access to everything and most of all no crashing ..which I have already run into on some programs..so time will tell.

Touch does not automatically mean Touch Screen. There are several ways to use touch in Windows 8 without a touch screen. For instance, you can get a Logitech TouchPad, which gives you full touch support in a graphics tablet like interface.
