Not really surprising. Sinofsky's job was to turn around the Windows division and ship product. He did that job quite well. He made the necessary cuts, and fired the people that were holding things back.

It's no secret he was not well liked, and that politically, he didn't play games. A guy after my own heart really. Where else was he supposed to go after turning Office into the Rockstar that it is, then turning around Windows division into the well oiled machine it now is? He was certainly not headed to CEO land.

People ask.. why leave so soon after the launch? And the reason is because that's the PERFECT time to depart. The Windows team is now focused on Windows 9, and whoever will be in charge has to take the reigns early in that process. Windows 8 is finished, step aside for the new blood.

Sinofsky don't have a job anymore

Ding, dong, the witch is dead!

Good bye, fairwell, adieu, Auf Wiedersehen!

Now to allow the CHOICE of metro or desktop UI at boot. Let's get to it MS.

From the article: Windows head Steven Sinofsky leaves Microsoft

he took control of Windows 7 following the troubled Vista launch and continued this role through last month's Windows 8 launch. His official title was President of the Windows Division
Sinofsky was responsible for Windows 7. His replacement is a part of the Windows 8 development team and will be in charge of future projects. Why are you celebrating Sinofsky's departure? Sinofsky's departure signals the beginning of the end of the traditional desktop at Microsoft. Why the dancing elephants?

Sinofsky was a HUGE proponent of the metro UI, I believe I read that he was in favor of the elimination of having the option of allowing the user to choose which UI to boot into.

Perhaps the replacement while on the Win 8 development team was NOT a supporter of such a choice.

During the development of Win 8 there was a company wide meeting in either September or October of 2011, it was reported that so many employees were disgruntled by how the development was going (and Sinofsky WAS IN CHARGE) that they walked out of the event in disgust. Could it be that they were against forcing the metro UI on customers? I would bet on it.

Even IF MS would like to see the "desktop" UI disappear, it is NOT going to happen anytime soon, my guess is that it will still be with us in a fairly similar form for at least another decade or more.

You canNOT browbeat the customer and get away with it, unless you are Apple and have a legion of wealthy zombies to mindlessly follow your lead.

Come on even Balmer said the surface don't sell well. Sinofsky stupid idea cost millions if it's not billions to Microsoft, and it's not working well. They invest a fortune in advertising and the thing don't go off the shelf.

I think Julie designed the ribbon interface which is hideous in my opinion and not to mention cluttered. I hope they open back that innovative studio because I loved the idea of the Courier. That place seems to keep thinking of good products meanwhile the main Microsoft seems to be kind of blah in the idea department.

    Interesting.

Unless win8 devices suddenly start shifting extremely well in the next couple of weeks, MS have a problem.

They will have missed the peak buying season - releasing Pro later will be difficult.

Consumers will have already seen win8 devices and left them on the shelf.

A range of higher priced devices doesn't seem likely to tempt many of them .

Some will be waiting for the Pro - they won't necessarily buy them - depends how they stack up against ultrabooks.

I am not sure the general public will know the difference. Even if they did - this is high priced territory - perhaps they will get some BYOD buyers - but the mass tablet market may have passed MS by.

That's not what Balmer said at all. He said they were off to a Modest start. Modest doesn't mean "Poor", in this case he was saying that it was modest because they have not fully ramped up their production and distribution channels. Surface is only available online and via the few Microsoft stores throughout the country.
