will my computer run windows 8

I have a Dell XPS 630, running windows vista 64 bit. It has a quad core q6600 cpu, with 4 gigs of ram NVidia GeForce GTX 560, windows explorer says the hard drive is 594 Gigs, but I think it was a 650 when I ordered the computer... probably a hidden partition but that isn't really important. I'm curious will my computer run window 8?

The only reason I am thinking of upgrading to windows 8 is this computer hasn't been formatted since I got it about 4 years ago. And it takes a few minutes to boot up now. (haven't timed it to know exactly how long).

I know I asked if it will run windows 8, but also how well will it run? Will it be slower or faster then windows vista?

On a sub-note: i have never had a real problem with vista (with the obvious exception that things are now running slow, but i don't think that is an o/s issue, i think that is just the computer needs to be cleaned up).

Vista is actually the most demanding of the windows OS, especially the 64-bit version. If it can handle it, Windows 7 and 8 would do it even better.

You have a quad core CPU, 4GB of RAM, and an even better video card than me. For sure Windows 8 will run, and it would run like a dream. Windows 8 is definitely fast. The worst of your troubles, in terms of it running, would be if you have some mid 2000s device or something whose driver MAY not work in 8. That is pretty rare, though, as most things that'd work for Vista 64-bit should work even in 8 and you shouldn't need to worry too much about that. I reckon you'll have more trouble with the human aspect of Windows 8, that is, getting used to the UI changes. :) The machine will definitely handle it though.

Support + Downloads: MX 518 Gaming Grade Optical Mouse - Logitech
my only question at this point is will my mouse work. just to clarify, will the setpoint software that controls my mouse (at the above url) will that work? It only says windows 7, vista, xp .. it doesn't list windows 8. any ideas if this is going to be a problem?
hmnm ok time to edit this post. the link takes you to the top page not to where you really need to be.

just below where it says
MX™518 Gaming-Grade Optical Mouse

are some links that says Support Downloads Troubleshooting (etc)
cilck Downloads and then on that page you can choose the operating system. sorry about the messed up link but the logitech site doesn't allow a direct link.

The mouse should work, I don't see why it wouldn't. At the very least it'd be usable, as for configuring it with the SetPoint software I have not tested this. My logitech mouse is on my desktop, which still runs 7. :)

Setpoint 6.50 smart installer is available now. I did have to reset some of my settings when I upgraded it after I was already in win8.

If you click the Download button on this link you can run the upgrade assistant which will tell you about any incompatibilities.
No need to actually place an order.

Using an SSD for your operating system and any frequently used data is a good way to make your PC work faster.
My PC uses an E6600 processor and with an SSD loads things like MS Excel and Word almost instantly.

Since you upgrading, if you have some extra money, throw a SSD in your PC, this is a good time when you re install an OS

I agree..... I put a SSD in both my laptop and desktop. Real nice and fast.

I picked up a 64GB off craigslist for $40 to try in my laptop. I don't save much to the drive so the size was just fine for now. Boots way faster. 30 seconds from pushing the power to entering password to logon. I liked it so much I got a 120GB SSD drive for my desktop. I use the SSD drive my my OS and apps. All data are on my other hard drives.

ok I now have all of my files backed up . and was about to open the box for windows 8.. and had a thought.. how do i know if i bought the 64 bit or 32 bit version? the receipt says win 8 pro 32 bit/64 bit.. but i don't trust receipts lol and i don't see anything printed on the box. I bought it from best buy and their item number is 6559083

in response to the previous post. I would like to put in an SSD but can't afford it at the moment.

If I remember right, Windows 7 retail box contained two discs, one was 32-bit and one was 64-bit? Is Windows 8 the same way? Did you check to see if there were two discs in there?

Since my last post i've, installed windows 8 (64 bit), installed Mcafee Total Protection, AVG Linkscanner, EVGA video card drivers, EVGA Precision X, Chrome, Imported bookmarks for chrome, currently installing Guild Wars 2 (that thing is huge so I have it running in the background as I am configuring other things). So far only one strange reboot, not sure what caused it, but other wise so far it's been good.

Things do run faster. :)

I do have a question, what directory is the background images stored in?

Which one Lock screen, start screen or desktop?

You can use a custom image for the lock screen or the desktop but I have not found a way to use a custom image for the start screen. I read some where that the default images for the start screen are stored in a .dll.
