I hate this friggin nonsense. I cannot even save a generic file to my "C" drive. Even after a clean install. There must be a way to rid myself of this nonsense.

Thanks.

Hello Rickkins,

Are you trying to save a file directly to your C: drive from an external source (ex: internet or removable drive)?

If so, then that has not been allowed since Vista to protect your Windows system folders/files from being accessed from an external source. Instead, you must save it to a location in your user folders (ex: desktop or downloads), then move it from there to where you like.

Hope this helps for now,
Shawn

By default, it's not allowed. You may have been logged into the built-in elevated "Administrator" account then. It will let you in that account.

Be warned though. Windows Store apps will not work while signed in to the built-in elevated "Administrator" account in Windows 8.

As Brink has stated and anyone who knows better.

The fact that you can not save files direct to the Root of C: drive is a good thing.
There is no good reason that I can possibly think of where you should be doing that anyway.

1.) security reasons
2.) People are always saving stuff to the craziest places without knowing better, such as C: drive or in the root of their profile
Then they can't find their documents/files and go crazy.

Do you mind us asking why it is so important?

You can use the tutorial below to elevate your current (and all) administrator account to have the same rights as the built-in elevated "Administrator" account.

Be warned, that this will put your computer at a higher security risk. Anything you run while signed in now will have full unrestricted access to everything on your computer.

Thanks Brink....but even that didn't do it.

I found this one at mdl...it did the trick.
In fact, I'm certain I've seen it here too....pretty sure I had done this first time I installed rtm, copied from here, and it did the trick. I had a different issue tho, did some stuff, etc...you know how it goes.

anyhoo... c&p (and beware editing via regedit can snokker your system well and good)
Here is the solution:

1. Open "Run" (Windows + R or in the Metro UI menu), type "regedit" and hit enter.
2. Go to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System".
3. On the right side find "EnableLUA" and change it to from 1 to 0.
4. Reboot your system and UAC is completely disabled.

I have to agree with the op, file permissions drive me crazy too. I keep all my docs on a separate drive to the OS. I then open up the user folder on C drive and by using the propertys menu i use the 'move' option to change the locations to point to the other drive containing my documents. The problem I get is I always end up not having permissions if I create a new account, try to access from another machine or decide to take my drive to another computer. Thank goodness for the take ownership registry tweak or I'd be lost. I really wish there was a way to turn off permissions permanently.

And I have NEVER had this kind of moronic problem.

This post is really made to the general public over all.

This is not a moronic problem. I would probably suggest Linux then.
However, you can still save things to the root of c: just not in the same way as you did before.

If you are coding an application that needs to write to certain config files or whatever, you are supposed to use Virtual Store under that users profile. People wanted a more secure OS and they got one. Now they want to make it less secure by running as full admin. Don't complain when/if you get infected, it's your own fault.

Even in XP people were supposed to create a limited user account after setting up all their software etc.
It was never intended that people run as full admin all the time.

You can do what you want with your PC and OS that's fine. But you take the risk and don't blame anyone or anything else but yourself for any problems you may incur by doing so. Whatever those may be.

and to note.. I have been playing with PC's since 91, I started on a 286 with DOS. I got my A+ in about 96 and my XP MCP in about 2002. I am a professional Help Desk support that covers everything from corporate software to MS software and beyond, I have many years of Desktop support as well. What I said above I don't say out of ignorance or MS Fanboish BS. It's just the facts as they stand today.

Even in XP people were supposed to create a limited user account after setting up all their software etc.
It was never intended that people run as full admin all the time.

that's something peoples have real time to understand.

.......I have been playing with PC's since 91, I started on a 286 with DOS.

lo, I start in 1979 with a TRS model II, cost me $ 2000 for a dual 8 Inches Floppy drives only , yes 8 inches

You can do what you want with your PC and OS that's fine. But you take the risk and don't blame anyone or anything else but yourself for any problems you may incur by doing so. Whatever those may be.

Well, golly gee, thanks fella...
But seriously I know the risks, I know how to take proper precautions etc. And I have never been infected. I got my rubbish locked up tighter than a frog's ass....
Hell, I only ever sent money to nigeria a few times....(hehehe)

and to note..

I hear what you're saying. But I hope that you get that I'm not a noob. I started on a 386dx, with 4 megs of ram, and 170m of hd. 14.4 modem for 500$(used) I can remember first time I booted it, it only had dos...of which I was totally clueless...I just sat there looking at a blinking cursor. I typed in 'run', 'go', 'start' etc until finally 'help'...finally got something. I've been learning ever since.

But I gotta have it my way, or no way at all......

But what you fail to understand is that times have changed, and it is not a bad thing to change with them.
the OS has changed, and as an IT professional I can not in good conscience not explain and strongly advise against trying to do some of the outdated notions of the past.

But I gotta have it my way, or no way at all.

which is fine, but there are many who think that way, and I know for a fact they will come screaming MS is crap, and it is their fault for my problems cause the OS is bugged and not secure.

Yep, that completely disables UAC. In Windows 8, EnableLUA stays set as 1 unlike in Windows 7 and Vista.

As usual, be warned that this will break Windows Store apps until UAC is enabled again and the computer restarted.
