So, a menu with all your applications and functions? Is that not what a start menu is?

A real start menu should point to apps, config options and default locations. In my humble opnion its a missing feature in 8. :)

The things I miss from the Windows 7 Start menu:

* Simply pressing Winkey and typing and having access to everything, programs AND control panel settings alike. In Windows 8, you have to CLICK on settings if you want it to be system related. Annoying. I have not found a way to circumvent this behavior.

* Having quick access to various explorer start points on click or winkey button press, such as "Computer", "Network" or "Control Panel". I was able to add these links to the start screen myself, but it's not quite as quick and easy as before. Easier to just open explorer via pinned taskbar and using the sidepanel. Still, I miss bringing up the start menu real quick, right clicking computer and doing 'manage', 'properties', or 'device manager' for super quick access to those things. Thankfully, they added Winkey+X.

* I was often lazy and used the 'most recent used apps' listing below the pinned listings in the Windows 7 start menu, for stuff I didn't want to pin down but still used here and there. This is gone in Windows 8, but with it taking up the entire screen I suppose there's more room for pinning the lesser important apps. Takes some getting used to, however.

* I miss the transparent glassy look of the original start menu from Windows 7. Then again, I miss this altogether throughout the entire OS. Hoping Windowblinds will come around and bring back the transparency and alpha blur capabilities that were removed from DWM.

Right-click any blank spot on the Start Screen, and "All Aps" pops up in the lower right corner. There's your Start Menu.

In Windows 8: :)

The Start screen is the new version of the Pin to Start Menu area from Windows 7/Vista

The All Apps or Apps screen is basically the new version of the "All Programs" in the Start Menu of Windows 7/Vista.
