    1) Yes, I installed it on top of the Windows 8 free Preview Edition, and it works fine. You do not need to install it on top of XP, Vista, or 7.

    2) I easily installed a Start button on the classic desktop. Reports that MS would make that impossible are not true.

    3) No gadgets! And it won't let you install them, nor will it let you install Yahoo Widgets. I quickly found a free program and I'm happily running gadgets.

    4) I can't find the anti-virus program.

    5) As with the preview version, I turn off the password, and it keeps turning itself back on.

    6) Internet Explorer 10 works great.

#2 - Would you please share what you did to get your start button? I'm using "Classic Shell", but would rather not have to install anything if there is a way to do it through the OS.

#4 - Windows Defender (look in control panel) has replaced MS security essentials. It even looks like MSE when launched.

#6 - IE 10 seems ok. There are some quirks I'm trying to get used to, and some sites I go to have a few issues with it.

I typed download Start Button into Google. The one I chose was Classic Shell, but in the past I have used the Vista Start Button and it works fine.

Thank you. I found Windows Defender and IT HAD NOT BEEN UPDATED IN 165 DAYS! I received no warning abut this, but I easily updated it.

I'm a diehard Firefox fan, and I consider Explorer 10 to be better.

I have twice downloaded the free e-book, Windows 8 for Dummies, and I can't find it in documents, downloads, or through Search. It is a .pdf file, and I have installed Adobe Reader, but it doesn't list it. Any suggestions?

I gave it a try, DM, but it didn't work. Later on, I'll try downloading it on 7 and on XP.

I believe Gadgets have been removed because they presented a nasty security flaw. Guess they figured that removing them was easier than fixing the problem. Plus with the drain on ram, I guess they figured they weren't worth it. At any rate, third party programs save the day.

I don't know why people would think that - it does show that MS has a serious PR problem if people believe they would do that.

MS have deliberately made it impossible to reconstitute/resurrect Windows own start menu.

Much as they would like to, they dare not prevent a popular 3rd party program like Classic Shell from working. There would be an uproar if they

My smart, intelligent wife easily downloaded Windows 8 for Dummies onto her Windows 7 rig and sent it to me on a flash drive.

There is no need to reconstruct the Windows start menu, because it's the Start Screen. Serves the same purpose and function.

Before I post this on an XP forum, I might need to run a reality check. To someone running XP, what does 7 have that he doesn't have? 1) gadgets--although he can get similar ones 2) Windows 7 themes 3) libraries 4) Aero--which his computer probably can't handle anyway. If he installs the 8...
