Becoming disenchanted with Win 8

I am starting to get very much disenchanted with Windows 8. There are a few different reasons but the main one is that when I make a new folder and then rename it, there are times when it wants to change the name. Here is an example: In the My Documents folder, I keep all the files and folders that are important such as Word Documents, Excel Spread sheets, Pictures, etc. So when I want do make a backup which I do periodically, I simply backup everything in the My Documents folder. So this morning, I connected my external drive to make a backup. I created a new folder and named it Backup for Oct. 30. I then started to back up the files that are in the My Documents folder (not the folder itself just everything that is in it.) I did a copy/paste and as soon as I clicked on paste, it changed the name of the folder that I named Backup for Oct. 30 to My Documents. Thinking I may have made a mistake, I tried it again and the same thing happened. I now have two folders named My Documents both with the same files and folders. To me this is unacceptable. We should be able to name a folder whatever we choose as long as it has legal characters without Windows deciding to change it. Has anyone else experienced this?

File History is not really a good substitute for backups. One should never get rid of backups, simply because they enabled file history.

I'm having trouble understanding exactly what you mean. I just did the same thing, and did not get the results you mention. This tells me you are probably not explaining it correctly. Please give a detailed way to duplicate the behavior in a step-by-step way.

There is probably something else going on here. And only by understanding exactly what you did can we help you.

How do you include C:\data to be included in File History? Or perhaps, C:\Important?

well he is referring to the "my documents" folder which is included in file history.. but good point I haven't really looked into whether or not there is a place to specify specific folders.. for that I suppose I would just copy and paste as he was and it works.. maybe its just a permission issue with copying that folder im not sure

actually just did a quick search and you can

Backup other folders
You have a folder that is not included by default. You can add the folder to the existing library or create a new library and then add it to the new library. The library is the collection of documents, music picture and other files. In different ways library works as folder and you can use browse and sort files.
But unlike a folder, a library gathers files that are stored in several locations. This is the important difference. The library does not actually store your items. They pull from folders that contains your item and you access and arrange the items in different ways. For example if you have music files in a folder of your hard drive and an external drive, you can access all the music files from the music library.
You can select the folder and include to an existing library. For example, select a folder as backup and on this folder right-click and move the mouse cursor to include it in the library and choose a library from the list.

Yes, but I don't really want to add all of my external folders as links inside of my library, but File History does not let me pick folders in any other way.

It's not the end of the world though, just not how I would elect to do it.

just create a new library called backup and dump all your backup files into it and file history will auto back it up...
seems easier to me but that's me

I tried it on my system and it works fine. I did both copy/past and also drag/drop. Just for clarity, the files are stored in a folder called Documents which is hidden and My Documents is a link. Right click on My Documents, select Properties and click on the Location tab and it will show you the actual location and it allows you to move it. But don't know why yours is messing up.

I think I know what may be the problem. Windows is not changing the name of your folder. It's changing the DISPLAY name of your folder.

Inside the documents folder is a hidden file called desktop.ini. You can see it if you show protected os files. In that file is a section called LocalizedResourceName, which looks up the name that Windows Explorer should display for the folder in a DLL file that contains localized translations for your culture.

The real folder still has its original name, but if you plop that file in a folder, Windows Explorer will display whatever name the file links it up as. So when you copied the contents, my guess is that you had hide protected OS files turned off, this allowed the selection of the desktop.ini file (which normally would not be selectable).

The funny thing here is that this should be the same in Windows 7. But maybe you didn't have Hide Protected OS files turned off on WIndows 7.

So in conclusion, this is nothing specific about Windows 8, and it's not actually preventing you from changing the folder name to whatever you want. You can just delete the file out of your backup if you want.

I just keep an up-to-date system-image on an external drive
and renew it whenever I make changes to C:.

C: only holds the OS and programs, all files are on a separate drive
and all downloads, saves etc. go directly there. My 'Library' folder is
virtually empty, but the locations where the files ARE stored are linked
to the Library.

These files get manually backed-up weekly to an external drive.

File History is not, therefore, relevant to me, and Reset and Refresh are
a poor substitute for sysimages as a backup/restore solution.

just enable file history.. don't really need to do backups anymore
I thank you for your input. What you are saying could very well be correct. But my point is that Windows is is changing the name of a folder that I made. We should be able to name a folder without Windows changing the name and then back up the way we choose..

With all due respect. The difference is, that is not what I chose to do. I'm sure that there are many ways to backup. My question was not what is the best way to backup, it was why did it not do as I expected.

Frank, see my comment #12. Windows is not renaming the folder, it just looks like it is because you are copying a system configuration file into the new folder.

Show hidden files is not the same as (un)hide protected operating system files.

The second option shows files that used by the OS itself to function, such as the desktop.ini files which you wouldn't normally see, even if you have show all hidden files checked.

But as I said, this is no different from Windows 7. It will do the same thing in the same situation.

I’ll try to explain it a little better. First of all bydefault we have a folder on drive C: called “My Documents”. In that folder iswhere I store all of my important data and folders. So when I want to make abackup I will go to my external drive and make a folder called Backup for Oct.30 (or what the date happens to be.) I will go back to the folder on drive c:called My Documents. I will select every file and folder and click Copy. I thengo back to my external drive and right click on the folder that I named Backupfor Oct. 30 and click Paste. Just as soon as I click “Paste” the folder that Inamed backup for Oct. 30 instantly chances to “Documents”. I’ve been usingWindows since Win 3.x and this has never happened. It may sound strange but that will happen everytime. That’s the only time it will change the name. Ordinarily when I do a copypast it does not happen—only when I do what I just described.

Frank. I've explained 3 times why this happens. Why do you keep ignoring me?

Your folder does not rename. Only it's display name changes. If you open up a command prompt, go to the drive and view the directory, you will see it's still named Oct. 30.

Delete the desktop.ini file from inside the folder. You will see it now goes back to it's "real" name.
