Questions about buying from microsoft directly

I originally didn't plan to buy Windows 8, mainly due to the price tag, I am a college student paying bills and have a limited amount of money. However I just saw that the price of Windows 8 PRO - is 40 dollars!

No this is not on ebay it's from microsoft directly. My question is are they basically selling me the product key? Would it be my responsibility to create a DVD Copy of Windows 8.

How does buying windows 8 by downloading work? Why is it soo cheap? Why isn't it 300 dollars like my last copy of Windows Ultime 7.

I don't know why the price, to boost adoption maybe.
You buy the key, providing you have a previous version to upgrade, and then download and burn the iso.
Don't forget to get the limited time offer media center key if you use that.

Microsoft will argue that no matter what you buy, you're basically buying only the product key.

But for argument sake, yes, when you select the $40 option; they expect you to burn your own CD / DVD which they provide for you to download. During the order process, you do have an option for a CD to be shipped to you for $15

there are no catches, microsoft for a limited time, until jan. 13th, 2013 is offering windows 8 pro for $39.99 as an upgrade (online purchase) to entice as many adopters as possible, to get the whole thing up and rolling.

If you have a legal copy of windows all ready on your computer, you can upgrade it for $39.99, click on the link below, upgrade advisor will inspect your computer for a legal copy of windows, after purchasing windows 8 pro you will be asked what you want to do, download a .iso file to burn to disc and install later or install straight to your computer, of course you will get the key as well.

Well thank you guys, I am still working on updating, getting my software and games reinstall. I enjoy the home screen a quick glance at the news and sports(go San Francisco 49'ers!). Right now my windows are weird this is due to my duo monitor setup though as soon as I download amd software I should be running just fine.

I found myself using the windows key more, which makes sense. This is my process. I need something press Windows Key> start typing what I need and boom :) in the keyboard the entire time no need for mouse. It's a continious process.
Where is the media center offer and what exactly is on it?

Thank you :) sadly I already purchased my 40 dollar copy, I wish I would of know about this earlier, it's an acceptable loss, after all win 7 pro is well over $200+

If you are entitled to the $14.99 offer, you have a couple of options - buy it anyway, or contact MS and let them know you should have got the discount coupon ( that's what you get from that page ).

They may well refund you the difference.

I think there was some way of contacting them on the email they sent with your product key.

They offer refunds if you can't get it to install - so that is probably the contact you should try.
