Need help in buying an SSD for Windows 8 Installation

I want to buy a SSD just for using it as an installation disk for good OS speed,

Someone at the thread https://www.eightforums.com/general-d...ndows-8-a.html is saying that windows 8 takes a long time to load with SSD "very slow and especially with a SSD"

If someone else is using SSD for windows 8 installation, please share your experience, also please tell me how much GB will be enough, I will be using some heavy 3d designing software and I don't play games

Not sure why the individual who stated "it takes a long time on a SSD" was having a problem because installing Win 8 on a three year old Intel M 25 80 gig SSD (Trim not supported) only took about ten minutes. Also, on my laptop with a SanDisk 240 gig (trim support) SSD it only took about fifteen minutes.

I installed a 256gb Samsung 830 ssd a few weeks ago & now have windows 8 & I can't believe how fast my computer is. 17 secs to startup, 5 secs shutdown & 2 secs to start any program. I never put my computer to sleep now as the startup is faster than sleep. These figures are for real. jimjoh

People having problems with slow SSD's is rarely windows 8 problem.
As for size there are 2 things to consider.
If we take out the fact that an average is install can range from any ware from 30-40gigs. once updates are done 3rd party drivers and a few app's installed. This also leaves room for metro apps.
So having that you look at these 1. Your ram, your page file is directly related to the amount of ram you have. You want your page file on the sad for performance so add an the amount of ram you have plus about 10% as a guess.
    2. The size of your render program + the size of your renders. You would probably want the whole program and any files it needs to get the most out of it.

Been a render machine I'm guessing you have rather a lot of ram. So I would be looking in the higher end of ssd size up around the 250gig size. I may be wrong and any one feel free to correct me. That is just my opinion.

Yes, there are no problems with Windows 8 on any SSD that i'm aware of. Any problems someone might have had and posted about are probably localized to their install (maybe a failed upgrade or something).

Which SSD to buy is a very personal thing. Like computers, faster ones are more expensive. You will have to weigh performance vs how much storage you want vs your budget.

Personally, I like my Crucial m4 256GB, and it performs pretty well (latest firmware gave me a bit of a speed improvement in Win 8 as well).

Thank You all for your suggestions, I have one more question, currently I'm running Ubuntu desktop version installed on my HDD, If I install Windows 8 on SSD, will I be able to retain ubuntu and switch to any of the OS at the startup..?

You would need to fix your mbr after windows 8 and new drive install.

There are two options. First, you could have Linux take over the MBR and boot Windows 8 and Linux, or you could use the WIndows boot loader (BCD) to boot the Linux install. If you keep Linux on your old hard drive, then that would be easiest.

The second method can be accomplished by issuing bcd commands, or use a third party utility like EasyBCD - Take control of your boot loader | NeoSmart Technologies
