Metro Tiles Do Nothing, Media Center 8 Goes Unresponsive on Setup

Hello everyone. Ever since I got Windows 8 Pro 64 bit, it's turned my computer into Ricky Retardo.

When I click on the Metro tiles for People, Photos, Video, Games, whatever ... it grows to fill the whole screen, and then immediately closes again like nothing was supposed to happen. I figured I needed to restart my computer. That didn't fix it.

Then I installed the Windows Media Center 8 with the promo code and everything. When you first start it, it tries to setup, and asks you whether or not you want Express or Custom installation. Picking either or on both options causes the entire program to go unresponsive and crash.

I recommended Windows 8 when I first got it because my computer seemed faster, but if this is the basic functionality of the OS not working worth a damn I'm a little aggravated. Does anyone have any suggestions?

If you did an upgrade over windows 7, then your only recourse may be to do a clean install. Lots of people have had problems with upgrade installs, most of the time a clean install fixes all the problems. Upgrade installs have always been problematic in Windows, and while they may work for some people... others have problems. Clean installs are always recommended.

I know you don't want to lose your settings and have to reinstall your apps, but trust me. You will spend a LOT more time trying to make a failed upgrade work than just biting the bullet and doing a clean install.

I just wiped my hard drive not too long ago so I'm not too terribly against wiping it again (not like I'm going to lose much), but I don't know how to do a clean install from an upgrade. I'm use to buying OEM discs and this is kind of my first digital upgrade. Does anyone know how to go about doing it?

I had the exact same problem as you. Ended up doing a clean install and all the tiles were working fine again (for now)

After some hair pulling and a couple reinstalls caused by the same issue (prior to installing media center, however), I found the problem to be caused by one of the windows update hotfixes. I'm not at home to double-check, but I believe it was the KB article that ends in 824 that was causing the problem. Uninstalling the update fixes the problem with certain modern ui apps closing.

That could be possible since the my metro apps only broke after doing the latest updates, installing a few programs and changing a few control panel settings.
