You stated you did not have the means to back up files. Try to find a way to backup and do the clean install. Many people also had issues with the upgrade option of Win 7.

Check the Device Manager and Event Viewer for possible issues.

Also, try the refresh option in Win 8 and select the option where your files and settings are saved. Click settings, change PC settings, click general.

You stated you ran Malawarebytes. Is that your AV or you running another. May try uninstalling the AV if you are running another AV besides the incorporated MSE.

Also, go to the Win 7 Forum and click the tutorials at top of page. Good info on checking startup/shutdown, most of which should apply to Win 8.

I have a 4 year old Sony laptop that is working fine with Win 8. Only had to download one driver from Sony. But I did the clean install.

I ran both Malwarebytes and MSE. I don't have another AV program.

It seems that the clean install is my best option. I appreciate your input, and will definitely check out the Windows 7 forum. I've tried a few things from there already, but I'll take another look.

    Thanks a lot!

Hi all, like everyone else I downloaded the developer preview last night and am starting to play with it. I'm installing on old test hardware, a Dell Inspiron 6000. Win 7 ran beautifully on it, but I'm having problems installing the driver for the ATI X300 built in. The current video device is...
