Should I give up at Windows 8?

I have now used my weekend trying to get Windows 8 Pro to work properly. But I keep running into problems.

My CPU i5 3570K won't clock down when idle, so it runs hot

My security (KIS 2013) don't work with java in Windows 8 (nomatter which browser I try) My homebanking uses java

Really slow USB 3 performance, and no new driver to be found

It looks ugly at desktop level without Aero

It is NOT faster at reboot than Windows 7 on my SSD, only at coldstarts

I have som troubble switching some Apps from Metro off, so they don't show with messages (for instence Metro Email )

I have an unknown hardware-thing in device manager, and I can't figure out what it is , I have tried to remove all with cables that is connected to the case, but no, it must be "something" on the mobo itself, MSI Z77A GD65 and MSI liveupdate does not know this hw-thing either

Other things has taken some time to get to work, but right now I am tired of fiddle around in Windows 8. As I can see in this forum, other has the same errors like me except with KIS 2013 from Kaspersky (am I the only user of this program?)
Big thanks for your "guide"forum which I have used a lot this weekend, and without it (and the rest of this forum) I had give up some time ago. Allthough it did not turn out the way I wanted, I had to admit, I have learned quite a lot, and some of it I might be able to use if/when I'm going back to Windows 7 Ultimate.

Any advice for me, before "format C:\"?

This is the first OS I have to give up since I tried CP/M in the early 80's!! I am just to stupid to use Windows 8

I've asked you before. Did you do an upgrade install or a clean install? Lots of people are having problems with Upgrade installs, and doing a clean install has fixed their problems.

I have a Z77 based motherboard as well, and I have none of these problems. My USB 3 works great.

Checking the MSI board, there's a new BIOS with Windows 8 support. Did you flash your BIOS?

    MSI Global ? Mainboard - Z77A-GD65

There are also a number of Windows 8 drivers available:

    MSI Global ? Mainboard - Z77A-GD65

You shouldn't need a new USB 3 driver, as Windows 8 includes a driver compatible with the Z77 USB 3.0 ports. This is one reason I think you did an upgrade, since this should just work (it does in mine and two others I've upgraded).

Do as Ickymay suggests and post the Hardware ID's and we can figure out what the problem is.

#3 and I have answered it. CPU not clocking down when idle (look at #3 ) Yes. A clean install on a complete new SSD. And Yes, I have the newest BIOS, 1006. I have gathered all drivers I could find and installed them of cource .

USB 3 is working, but at much slower speed than in Windows 7. Also my CPU won't clock down, that's even worse for me.

The hardware ID for the unknown device is ACPI\VEN_INT&DEV_33A0

EDIT: What!! I see on the link you wrote, that on this place there is a newer BIOS, a 1007! I have looked here MSI Europe ? Mainboard - Z77A-GD65

And there the newest is 1006. Sorry, that's me looking in the wrong place, sorry mate

OK, now something is going to loosen up .
My CPU now throttle up and down as expected. USB 3 is a little better, but still far from Windows 7 (copyspeed in win 8 about 40.000 kbytes/sec, same port, same disk in win7 is around 93.000 kbytes/sec)

I can't enable the first set in "Windows 8 feature" in BIOS. When doing so it restarts 3 times and then writing, that I have no graphic card that supports windows 8 feature GOP (don't know what that is). But fastboot and USB settings can be set, and maybe therefore USB3 is now a little better. Will it help if I turn on onboard Intel graphic? And what will I get from doing this?

Thank you so much for the link to a different (and more quickly upgrade) webpage for MSI.

Well, the throtteling went away as soon as I OC'ed my cpu again.
And Windows 8 has no clue of the speed of the CPU

So it sounds like most of your problems are related to this specific hardware. Could be the BIOS still has a few problems.

You can't rely on the reported speed on Windows 7 to 8, as Windows 7's speed report was more generic. Windows 8's report is far more accurate.

Instead, you should measure the amount of time to copy a large file, and then the amount of time to copy a bunch of small files. Then do a comparison of the actual time it takes.

Also, did you install the Intel driver? Or did you use the one built into Windows?

With the restarting, it may be that you need to enable the functionality BEFORE you install windows, or maybe you need a specific driver.

The hardware ID you mention seems to be Intel Smart Connect. There's a driver on the MSI page I linked to for this.

Regarding Overclocking.. well, that could have issues.

What did you overclock it to? Is the Maximum speed correct? 4.3Ghz?

If you have SpeedStep on, with Turbo.. that would explain things. This article talks bout the issue:

Task Manager reporting wrong CPU frequency - Neowin Forums

Turbo can make one core run significantly faster.

I tested Kaspersky KIS 2013 with Windows 8 RTM and didn't have any issues at all with Java in any browser. It worked well except whenever I re-connected to my VPN client my computer would BSOD, so I uninstalled it. I would post your KIS 2013 queries to Kaspersky Lab Forum -> Kaspersky Internet Security & Anti-Virus, you'll have plenty of people that can help. You will have to provide them with a GSI report for them to analyze but they'll tell you how to do that.

What version of KIS did you use #8? Mine is ver 13.0.1.4190

What is Intels "smart connect"? I don't seem to miss it since it does not run (no driver).

The speed USB3 is messured with Totalcommander and some big files (dvd-images), and it does in fact take about twice the time for an image to copy in Win8 via USB3 compared to same file, same drive, same port in Windows 7.

Smart Connect is a tool that can update information on your system even when the computer is in sleep mode. Yeah, most people don't give a rip. So if you don't want to use it, don't bother installing... but if you want to get rid of the warning message, then just install the driver and don't use it.

You didn't answer my question about USB 3. Did you install the Intel driver? Or did you just use the one included in Windows 8?
