Windows 8 Tiles Not Working 64 bit

Upgrade from Windows 7 Home Ultimate 64 to Windows 8 64 bit

    I found suggestions for:

    1) deleting OLE from the Registry under Local Microsoft Software - did not work
    2) Create alternate users - did not work
    3) User profile change - did not work
    4) change Display settings - did not work

Hello pcbishop. Welcome to Eight Forums.

Use an imaging program to save your work.
If you can, try a clean install on unallocated space.

mdmd - Thank you for the suggestion although I think a fresh install represents a complete 100% failure on the upgrade route. You know if I had not paid for the upgrade perhaps that would not be a big deal but you know it is if that is the only solution.

It's true many are having problems. However, upgrade does not necessarily mean install on top of a previous installation. There are so many potential incompatibilities or system configuration technicalities that the process is at risk. There are no guarantees. There is no statement of upgrade guarantee on the box or digital download. All installations are unique.

I disagree, the best way to upgrade is to make a fresh install.

mdmd - thank you for the comments. Do you have a suggested path for installing again, I did do the digital download and would like to try the overall reinstall. I do have a good and recent backup of the entire system.

Assuming a single drive, no dual boot, and everything you need to save, is safe, you could create a bootable DVD or bootable thumb drive, depending on your system, using the provided ISO download. Boot and when prompted, select to do a custom installation, and delete all the partitions. Follow the prompts.

Otherwise, download and make a bootable GParted CD, and using their utility, delete any partition that does not contain important data. No need to format anything. It's called installing on unallocated space.

This is only 1 step. Others have done clean installs, but continue to have problems due to hardware drivers, issues that are not typical relating specifically to 8, and software installs that are problematic. Others have metro app issues. Take 1 step at a time. The priority is to not lose important data. Applications can be reinstalled.

I have the same problem after an upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8 Pro (64 bit).

I noticed that several of the machines that I was playing with at Best Buy had the same problem (tiles exiting back to the start screen), so this seems like it may be a common issue.

The install to unallocated space did work for me. So no upgrade where I kept my data worked and I choose to install to a USB Drive then I did the boot and install from that drive and deleted my system partition then installed back to it - of course I had all my data backed up. It did the trick and I immediately had a working installation.

Good luck and thank you to mdmd

Yup, I'm thinking a clean install is the only way I'm going to get this to work. The interface seems quite cool and I'm really looking forward to playing with it, once I get it working.
