Hi Everyone, Just seeing if anybody else is having this same issue. When I play an Mpeg2 video file thru Media Player, its plays the sound fine, but there is not video. The video played with no problems with Media Player in Windows 7.

I have loaded VLC & the video played fine, but I like to use Media Player.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

As you found out you can't run video's in Windows Media Player any longer. Windows 8 was designed that way on purpose.

You have to use VLC but you can also use Windows Media Center to play video's either for free or for a small fee depending on what ever upgrade offer was used.

That's not entirely true. I was able to watch an MP4 or WMV video file thru media player.

Can I ask what you mean by "play video's either for free or for a small fee depending on what ever upgrade offer was used."

For instance, if someone paid the $40 for the upgrade, how could they get Media Player to work like it did in Win 7?

It's just like Windows 7 in that you have to install codec packs, especially with nonstandard files like MKV.

Almost my whole library is MKV because of its flexibility so I understand the pain of codec packs. People like VLC because all the codecs are contained within VLC. However, I prefer codec packs so that they're throughout the system and therefore all media players in that system can use the codec.

.mkv is not a file, its a container. It usually contains x264 as the video stream which Windows understands. Why Microsoft still hasn't included built in .mkv support is a mystery.
