License terms of $40 upgrade offer

    Hi,

I had planned on upgrading one laptop to Win8 using the time-limited $40 offer, but now I'm instead selling that laptop.

Are there any time limits to when the $40 upgrade has to be installed? For if not, I would buy it now anyway and install it a bit later on another machine.

    Thanks.

No, the limitations are on the pricing (sales) of the upgrade. It's an upgrade license, and if it took you a year to use it, it'd still work as it was a legitimately purchased upgrade license.

Once you bought the licence, you can install any time you like because I haven't seen the time limits mentioned anywhere.

    Yes, Cluberti is right.
It acts as if it was a legitimate license any-time and I plan on buying quite a few for future reference. (Old fix-em-ups, test PC's, old laptops)

FYI the $40 upgrade offer is limited to 5 copies.

Be great if they did win7 at that price.

They don't need to though, win7 sells very well as it is.

Now that I see the process in action, I'm wondering how you guys will be buying promo licenses in advance. Are they not tied to the machine doing the downloading on Win8? Or is there a way to buy the licenses independent of the download, and use an ISO from an initial download?

As far as I know, there's no way to buy the $40 promo copy other than through the Upgrade Assistant, the Upgrade Assistant requires a qualifying OS, and will only offer the version at the same bit depth as that OS. The upgrade can then be used on any qualifying PC; you don't need to use it on the PC you used to buy it.

Similarly, you can get the upgrade for $14.95 for a qualifying Win7 PC purchased after sometime in June (I don't recalll the date). You are not required to use the upgrade on that PC, though. It's legitimate to use it on a different PC.

The upgrade for $14.95 is for the qualifying Win7 PC only.

    You can make a ISO:
