I see. You can use any machine as the launch vehicle for downloading the .iso, and take it from there. Thanks very much! Also, great job by Brink again.

There is no iso file downloaded.

    That is not correct.

The upgrade asst thing downloads the windows setup files.

Usually you will get the option to create an .iso from those downloaded files.

You don't actually d/l an .iso file.

Not unless you get technet/msdn one. That is different, btw. They contain a proper install.wim and are much more useful.

The windows setup files that the UG Asst downloads have an install.esd instead. It is heavily compressed, which makes the d/l smaller - but there is no way I have yet found to service it.

I don't know what the purchased boxed copy contains - I have asked a couple of posters who have bought them - but they obviously had no idea what I meant.

Yes, that is exactly what I said.

It does not download an .iso

    It downloads the setup files.

It then offers the option to either run setup, or (usually) to create an .iso from the setup files it has downloaded.

There is no .iso file downloaded.

That is a bit like saying a text file is a zip file. It isn't. You can rt click the text file and put it in zip - but the text file is not in itself a .zip file.

[ Interestingly, the install.esd is initially encrypted - it is decrypted in a temp folder, before being moved into the hidden ESD folder on the root of the drive. Unfortunately it is not unpacked , it remains as a .esd file. ]
