Can't say I am surprised with this. Timing can't be good for MS but hey they have no one other than themselves to blame.

Windows 8 Gets "Overwhelmingly Negative" Response from Vendors, Expectations Plummet

An analyst with Topeka Capital, who was touring Asia, meeting sources among supply chains, brings bad news to Microsoft investors. Analyst Brian White notes that the sentiment (among vendors and parts of the supply chain) about Windows 8 remains "overwhelmingly negative." Expectations from Microsoft's new client operating system plummet, as vendors don't see much activity following the October 26 launch.

All of which could have, & should have been avoided by simply giving end users a built in choice allowing them to choose which environment to boot into. Instead, ms chose the route of arrogance and tried to foist the metro spaghetti upon all users. The results were entirely predictable. I personally won't be surprised to see Ballmer turfed out for this debacle.

What does end user choice have to do with supply chain?

For the record, I read the original article linked below this "hear-say" one.

These are market investor analysts. Most are skeptical in today's world market conditions. If one wants to get depressed, listen to these reports daily. :( The markets have been up and down like yo-yos as of late.

Most businesses (vendors) don't stock shelves as much as in the past, especially with newly released items.

I've always stated that 8 won't be a big seller out of the gate. It's not geared for enterprise, but rather for the general population, but then again, enterprise never buys first. Enterprise will upgrade to 7, which will be income for MS. I doubt enterprise will ever use 8, but rather a 9.

Most computer enthusiasts will buy first via downloads for the most part. These/we are the word-of-mouth advertisers for MS. That's pretty much split 70% for and 30% against, if one reads the polls, which I admit is low from past OSs.

The next wave will be preinstalled on devices bought for Christmas, for MS is about to release it's ad campaign shortly to target this.

The only thing I agree on is that the big wave will be April/May of 2013. That's when it will really take off.

For the author to state out of context that " One of our contacts does not expect Windows 8 to be material until the second-half of 2013" is absurd. One?!! Hollywood-type negative propaganda IMO.

What does end user choice have to do with supply chain?

Not sure if you are trying to be sarcastic because you like Windows 8, but I think it's obvious what he means. Most users are not happy with the dual OS experience of Windows 8, particularly the fact that it forces you into Metro. This has been documented on an overwhelming majority of tech sites. As a result of this demand for the upcoming OS is down. Pc vendors have been beaten up over the last few years. This product was supposed to correct that. Many vendors are betting the farm on this. Negative reviews and low demand has ramifications throughout the supply chain. From the bank funding to retail shelf allocation and everything in between. These days it is all about the buzz!

If I read this right, it says that Windows 8 won't be a euphoric money fountain for OEMs immediately after October 26th.

Umm, that happens like EVERY new Windows release. It took a while before 7 kicked up as well. Every release takes about six months before traction is hugely made. After the Christmas shopping season, people usually have new PCs, or tablet PCs in this case, and that effect trickles down to the friends and relatives of the person that has the new tablet PC, and will make them more likely to buy one over an ipad.

Windows 8 didn't happen overnight. Success of it won't be overnight. Seems a little stupid to think such.

Not stupid. This is not 2009. Things have changed. If it doesn't take off immediately, it doesn't take off. Look at every product released in the last few years. The Windows seven comparison isn't really fair. It's apples and oranges. Windows 7 supposed success has more to do with attrition than revolution. Most people disregarded Vista, so they had not upgraded their OS for almost a decade! What were they supposed to do? use Linux?

The tablet market is a completely different world. It is evolving everyday. It is not like PCs. People want the latest and greatest features. They are almost disposable. People are not going to buy 6 month-old tablets.

From what I've seen, it seems to be selling fairly well in the areas where it's now available for purchase. There may be concerns among OEMs, and certainly the pending release has disrupted PC sales, but it looks like, despite the tech blogs, the average Joe is pretty excited about the OS.

The average joe probably doesn't care that much about what OS is on their computer, as long as they turn it on and can get email and facebook. I don't think a lot of people even know that Windows 8 is even coming, let alone in less than 2 weeks.

Really? And you got ALL that from that article that doesn't even mention Metro or anything specific to W8 other than it being the supposed "savior" to declining PC sales?

Think for a moment that a few years ago people were buying new PCs with multiple cores, TB drives, GBs of memory and you really think that they are all ready to replace those monster machines to something better and faster? How fast of a computer does the average consumer need to run Office and browse the web? The declining PC market has more to do with computers being fast enough that don't need to be replaced every couple of years. You'd think these analysts would have half a brain to realize this.

Windows 8 is going to increase the sales of Windows 8 devices, not specifically the PC, most people will upgrade the OS on current PCs for $30 than spend money to replace them.

If I were planning to use Windows 8 I would upgrade my existing (4 1/2 year old) system rather than buy a new one.

PCs and laptops have largely given way to those cute little tablets and smart phones. People now want information at their fingertips no matter where they are. For the average user, a dual-core or quad-core box with a couple GB of memory and modest disk space will be fine for a long time. They won't need a new PC for what they do and Win8 won't do anything new for them.

More people lined up to buy the new super duper phone from that "A" company than will show up on day one to by a new Win8 tablet or PC. You may have to look long and hard to find much mention of it in the mainstream media.

I quite completely agree.
My girlfriend, her family, most of my friends (apart from a couple of them which are as much as nerd/enthusiast as me) don't even know Windows 8 is being released in less than 10 days.
They just know that "well, Windows 7 won't last forever and sooner or later something will supersede it".

By the way, I don't really think reviews should be so negative: I for one was disliking Metro, but once decided to give it a try I now admit don't really feel bad with it.
I mean: boot is definitely faster in Windows 8, the desktop is still there (and if you hybernate from the desktop, as soon as you fire up Windows again you're brought directly to the desktop again), and once you rearrange the Start menu tiles a little you have everything at your fingertips.

I'm trying to use Metro just as a huge and colourful Start menu, but with time I'll try to get used to it as a whole and even start using apps.
For the moment, a shortcut to "shutdown /h" on the desktop solved all of my problems and now I can define myself happy with the new OS. :D
