    DirectDraw games performance

Dunno if this was asked before, but I searched and found nothing.

I am having issues with games that seem to be DirectDraw based. There are two main things I noticed:

Performance - Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive - the game works awfully slow. My machine may not be the best there is, its a Q6600 with GTS 450, but c'mon, this is an old game.

Fonts - I really wanted to play Gangsters and Atlantis 3, but the fonts are not rendered for some reason. I tried comparing the fonts in windows 7 (luckily saved the old windows 7 dir) but no fonts seem to be missing. I've read that they scrapped Cleartype, but surely those games don't use it?

Tried all the compatibility settings. Any ideas?

    GTS 450 - GeForce GTS 450

    Q6600 - Intel® Core™2 Quad Processor Q6600 (8M Cache, 2.40 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB)

    Ps.

    Just a reference.....

WIndows 8 hasn't released completely to the market yet, i suggest you to wait until Microsoft publishes more drivers, plugins, etc..

    DirectDraw...

You need to install the full DX9 package (about 90mb) since games still use it.
Win8 only has support for DX10 and 11.

Also check to see if you need c++ redistributables (2008, 2010) + updated graphics drivers and Intel chipset drivers (the system generic devices often need update, but the best part is: people usually never update these).

For cleartype: yes we have it!

    here are the details:

You can also do what VIIB says and wait until more people use 8 and when more support is available. But I'll certainly try all the options available at the moment.

    Hope this helps.

@Hapochi, ClearType maybe is only for improving text resolution and brightness. I don't think it affects anything related to gaming graphics.

Like Hapochi said, download DirectX 9.0, and Update it to 11.0 ( If you want to update... )

That was mentioned just in case he wants to know that ClearType is available.

But you're right, it's not required. DX9 is more important in this case.

Pretty much the same problem with Desperados. Crazy slow.
I installed directx 9: DirectX end-user Runtime Web Installer
Tried a recommendation (although for win 7) of a direct draw emulator but the game wont start just crash.

Well, it works with Wine3d-s ddraw.dll (plus wined3d.dll and libwine.dll), but the on screen controls and mini-map are corrupted, and useless. It's kind of playable with hotkeys... A good solution still eludes me.

Windows 8 no longer supports screen resolutions with colour depths other than "true colour" (24-bit depth or 16,777,216 colours). 8-bit and 16-bit screen resolutions are emulated in software, and the DirectDraw used in Windows 8 results in unusual behaviour or poor performance in certain older...
Hello! Apparently DirectDraw games don't run to well on Windows 8. I recently wanted to play a Desperados an old isometric tactics game. But it ran like 10% the speed it's supposed to. So it was unplayable. There are some alternative ddraw stuff out there. Actually one works somewhat: with...
Hi, after moving to Windows 8 I noticed a performance loss in many video games. After doing some testing I came to the conclusion that it is caused by the DWM(Desktop Window Manager) stealing CPU cycles from the games. In order to make completely sure DWM was the culprit I tested the same games...
Hi! I recently purchased Dell inspiron 17r and due to problems in the first model I had to run win 7 on it for few days, and games like far cry 3 darkness 2 ran fine on it. After a replacement pc, I installed the same games(on win 8) but they lag, especially when the cut-scenes are played,...
I am completely new to Windows 8 since I installed it today, and when I went into the X-Box games app, I couldn´t see any of my purchased games from GFWL, what gives? It would only seem logical or doesn´t it?
