I downloaded it to see what it would be like, and it was just awful. The legacy of a great game since windows 3.1 has ended, and has been replaced by some piece of crap with achievements, challenges, and goofy graphics. Things are looking worse and worse for the future of computing...

You do realize, there will probably 200 different versions of Minesweeper in the Windows store within about 6 months. Some of them probably exact clones of older versions.

Of course. But the official version that has occupied countless hours of pretending to work is gone forever. Yes, there will probably be exact clones, but it's just not the same when you don't have the confidence that there will be minesweeper on EVERY SINGLE PC, ready to play instantly, with no need to download extra software.

If you've time to play that game then you should have time to search it. I've always disabled games from "turn of features" menu.

Just buy the games that are over 2GB. They're something that you actually play

Games like Minesweeper are great little 5 minute diversions when you need a small break.

I haven't DLed it, does it have the "tower" ads in it too? That's what's ruining other games like the available sudoku game (Beside them needlessly taking up an entire 24 inch monitor when they really just need to occupy a small corner of it :/)

The old Minesweeper in Win8:

Use the old one from XP/Vista/7 it has to work!

I wasn't very specific at the moment, but it seems the copies from Win7 to 8 don't work.
We need this fix: What Happened to Solitaire and Minesweeper in Windows 8? - How-To Geek

The files need to be patched to fix the OS version check and then they'll work again.

Extra stuff:
For those willing to use Windows Movie Maker from Vista just copy the whole movie maker folder from Vista's Program Files to Win8 and it will work.
