Steam games and task manager problem.

I have a nice computer with 2 monitors and my current OS is windows 8. I often play steam games and sometimes they crash or i control esc/alt tab to exit them to Google something on my other screen. This will freeze the game on my primary screen causing it to go black and my mouse to not click on that screen. The obvious solution is to ctrl+ult+del and task manager. However task manager will open on the primary screen that is still glitched black. Is there a solution or do i just restart every time. If you could help it would be greatly appreciated.
Games that have glitched this way - Sanctum, Fallout 3 , bioshock, and a few more.
