Windows Game Developers Didn't know about DirectX

    Hey y'all,
So I've been watching this game called Modern Law, it's supposed to be made for Mac, Windows, and Linux. Anyway, they came out with a demo version a couple days back and when I tried to play it I got no picture/video, just audio. I told them about it and when I asked if the problem might be caused by DirectX 11 they told me that they were working off of Mac's and didn't even know about DirectX. I believe in this game and I want to see it work on my system. Is there an easy fix for this or is going to take some brains.

P.S I am very new to Windows, all of Windows, not just Windows 8.

Really?! Can't anyone help me? Is there another program besides DirectX that I could download/install on to my computer to get the demo to work?

DirectX is part of windows only and all programs using it have to conform to it, to be written for it in other words. It can't be uninstalled or replaced with something else. There are other standards that are not Windows specific but are supported by video card divers like "Open GL" and any games written with it in mind have to support it as well as video card and it's drivers.
So in other words, NO it can't be replaced. If that game is not written for DirectX, and apparently is not since they did not even know about it, it may be in Open GL which is open standard but your video card does not support it. Ask them about "Open GL". Apparently they did not port that game from MAC properly at all, some programers, sheesh. DirectX, in it's various incarnations is around since Windows 95. 19 years old and they didn't hear about it, Mac or no Mac, my 9 year old niece knows of it.

Apparently they do know of DirectX, but they didn't make it compatible because they have no PCs at all. I guess they're all Mac! Kinda weird for game development!

I've also asked them about Open GL.

They are not too keen to port it properly then. New Macs are on the Intel platform and windows could be installed on them too, either in VM or as dual boot. Just like some Intel platforms can be made to run Macintosh OS, so called "Hackintosh". Still, they had to have access to a windows machine to do this porting, if nothing at least thru "Boot Camp" for Mac but it's not a 100% compatible with everything.
So, unless they fix it, you are SOL for that game.

If a game developer tells me they don't know about Direct X and are purportedly developing a game for PC.... I'd run far far away from them.

Sort of like a business company telling you they never heard of Outlook mail. This info kind of goes hand in hand for the field you're in.

    My two cents.

That too but still it could be a Flash game or work thru browser, who knows but those guys probably don't, lol. Carelessly written program, even if it is "only" a game can wreck havoc with rest of the system, specially if it starts messing with registry and shared .DLLs. Dx goes pretty deep into system and can mess up a lot of stuff too. Since there is just no picture but rest seems to be working, it may be even just a mater of wrong resolution or frequency without dependance on DX. Even large game developers have problems when porting from game machines and more often than not make a mess of otherwise good game.
I remember long time ago, I was trying to port some programs from Atari 400 to Radio Shack CoCo, both of them used same BASIC, there was only 100 or so lines of code and still it was difficult job. If it was that easy, everybody would be doing it.

Could I download Open GL and only use it with the game? Not "replace" DirectX, just not use it when I play the game.

That comes with video card drivers. It could be done in video card hardware or be done by processor, in software. It is not replacement for DirectX. Game has to be made to support it.

The game (or demo) does support Open GL...

Some of the games I have seen have the options to select which one to use, dx9 or 10 or 11. Honestly, I have just a little approximate knowledge of what these do most of them from experience. - dx9 runs smoother (just for me i suppose) - dx10 just adds shinys and i did not really use it....
There were some reports in August that graphics card manufacturers have no drivers for this new DirectX 11.2 standard that MS has developed and will release with 8.1. Is this a concern for those (probably all of us) that have graphics cards which do not support 11.2? Any reason to wait until the...
