Solved Direct3d missing - Can't play Bioshock infinite

Hello everybody

So, i am missing direct 3d in my registry editor, and I think that is why I am having problems. The problem is that I can't run games for example when I start Bioshock infinite, after a couple of seconds or minutes it goes black. I've had this game installed on another computer with the same specs where it was working perfectly fine.

at first it said I'm missing direct 3d. but when i tried to install directx again it said i already had the latest version.

I have all the latest drivers for my devices, and a power supply on a 1000w

I've had games want to install older versions of DirectX when installing the game, usually DirectX 9. I just let them even if a newer version is already installed. As far as I know it hasn't caused me any issues. Your issue may be that the game is looking for an older version of DirectX or something that was in the older version but isn't in the newer version. Create a restore point, just in case, and try installing say DirectX 9. Or better yet, have a look for a DirectX folder on the game CD/DVD and install that if its there.

Bioshock should be supported by directx 11, and also i tried installing other versions of directx but it says that i already have a never version. so i cant install any other directx? As i said i'm missing direct3d and when the game closes sometimes it say that i am missing direct3d. but in dxdiag all directx features are listed as enabled, although in reg edit the folder direct3d is not there.

Yes but does your Video card support DirectX 11? How old is the Video card?

EDIT: disregard, your screenshot wasn't up when I started my post, I only saw it after I hit the post button and the page refreshed.

Nvidia GT 640 here, my feature set shows 11.0,10.1,10.0,9.3,9.2,9.1. The system tab of DXdiag shows DirectX Version: DirectX 11. I'm thinking yours only supports DirectX 10, not sure what that means, just an observation. It might be a good idea to check for and install any newer graphics drivers if available. Or even reinstall the current version.

I have the latest graphic driver installed, and i have tried reinstalling mine completely. All in all i think the problem lies with my directx and i can't install a previous version because every time it just says that i have a never version. So once again i think the problem is that i am missing my direct 3d. So does anyone know how to reinstall directx? without screwing windows up?

I was waiting for an answer and I didn't see there was a second page... -.-
i read your link and none of the options on the page resolves my problem, but i thank you for the effort.

Well, then my last resort is to reinstall windows 8 maybe that will restore direct3d since directX 11.2 is included. Thanks for the fast replies everybody.

Yes i read that, but i have tried that before i entered this forum, it doesn't create a direct3d folder, and as it said: "Note When you run this package, no change is made to your version of DirectX, Direct3D 9, Direct3D 10.x, Direct3D 11.x, DirectInput, DirectSound, DirectPlay, DirectShow, or DirectMusic". which means direct3d won't be effected. but again, thanks for the answer.

I've installed DirectX 9 on my systems, even Windows 8 systems, and some files were copied/updated during the process. A lot of them are skipped but some are copied. The DirectX 9 redistributable package is what I have saved to my PC.

Have you tried installing this? Can't hurt to try at this point. Download DirectX 9.0c (full package) Windows Drivers - Software Patch.

PS: I don't think your video card supports Direct3D 11.

I Was going to delete windows 8.1, but then i thought i might as well try the ones that seemed a little risky. So i didn't see popeye's post and i don't know if it works or not. But now i can play all games except for Bioshock infinite.

I tried this: How to downgrade DirectX 11 and 10 to DirectX 9.0c Windows XP Vista 7 8 - YouTube - (in case other sees this).
and it worked, that combined with disabling "enable adaptive anti-aliasing" in AMD catalyst control center.

If Bioshock is the only game that doesn't work i will settle with this until i get a new video card. Thank you all very much, and i will try Popeye's link in a near future.

you have to download the runtime installer and not the web installer. as the web installer wont install if there is a newer version on the system

Download DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010) from Official Microsoft Download Center

when you click on it will ask where you want the files extracted to,for example "c:\directx"

you then go to that folder and look for dxsetup.exe and double click that. it will go and install the directx files.

this process has been known to fix directx errors and it replaces some files and registry settings needed for directx 9

Since Bioshock Infinite is a steam based game it should install everything that's needed. Also, if you are trying to run Bioshock without Steam, it's a hack, and as such, don't expect it to work.

Additionally, just because Windows 8 has DX11 installed doesn't mean you don't or shouldn't have to update DX files.

You might read steps 5 & 6 here to get an understanding of how DX11 functions - Tips on Troubleshooting Game Issues - Windows 7 Help Forums

popeye & dskiller are right, try updating your DX files. However, as stated earlier, the game should have done that for you, but update anyway.

You also need to make sure you have the latest video card drivers installed on your system.

You could also try verifying Integrity of game cache....

And for the record, I have Bioshock Infinite and it is compatible with Windows 8.1 and runs just fine.
