Solved FPS Problems with all games

Hi all,

I just bought a new computer last week. I grabbed one that was better than my old computer, but it is horrible with FPS(frames per second) on games (Skyrim, FF XIV, Divinity: Dragon commander all at 15-19 FPS)... even when I go low on the settings. My old computer was on windows 7, and I have seen mixed reviews on whether or not windows 8 handles games poorly.

The specs of my new computer are as follows (sorry for any info that is not relevant):

There is a chance Hyper-V is enabled which could be causing the FPS issues, if you open the charm menu (place mouse in top right corner of the screen) click on Search and type in Windows Features, click Turn Windows features on or off and once it finishes loading, see if Hyper-V is an enabled feature, if so disable it and reboot if required. Then check your FPS.

I'm seeing your current resolution is set to 1920x1080, this card is in no means a 1080p gaming GPU with the titles you have mentioned and to me the FPS seems right with those games. Have you tried playing those games at 1280x720, that would be the best resolution for modern games for the HD 8570 when it comes to performance. I also tried looking up benchmarks on the card and unfortunately didn't find any besides a video AMD posted of BF3 getting 32-39FPS @ 720p high settings. Of course others may find the solution if my theory here is incorrect.

the 8570 is pretty low end. more meant for 720P gaming. I can't believe HP (well, actually I can) would package an i7 with this low-end card...

Should this card be able to play with a FPS higher than 19-20... because I installed Final Fantasy 14 and tested it out. I am still getting only those low FPS. If the card should be able to run the game smooth, than there is something going on with either the game itself (I will know when I can test with other games) or a windows 8 thing.

The thing is, my old computer (which my wife is now using) has an AMD 6850 that can run FFXIV on high with minor settings taken down, at 55-60 FPS.

Thanks for your input! You have all been amazing!

P.S. I tried just upgrading the graphics card on the original purchase, but nothing worked on it. I had a tech try multiple cards, but the computer would not detect any he tried.

GT 640 is not a gaming card, just like the AMD card you had in the previous PC, which indicates the card isn't powerful enough and the 6850 is obviously a very good gaming card which can handle games like FF14. You're welcome for any help I have offered, best of luck to you!

I am a bit confused. There are a few versions of the GT 640, and I have the one in here that is 3GB memory. Comparing some of the specs to each other, it seems the GT 640 has better stats. Man, this is rough.

The 3GB is meant to assist with multiple monitors, it is still not a 1080p card by any means it is Nvidia's low end gpu, if you want to game you can look at the suggestions I posted for the nvidia or amd gpu.

I have been trying to find a solution for the SLOW FPS people are getting on Windows8 with games that use an earlier version of Directx. I see alot of discussion here regarding graphics cards, but I think that may be a red herring. What i have observed is that people who upgraded from Windows7 to 8 have their FPS drop after the install and those who get a new computer with WIndows8 installed have no probleming installing and running a game but the FPS drop.

I suggest people try the game that doesn't work, and when they have it running, then offer the solutions.

It seems to me there is something different in how WIndows8 directx works then Windows7 in its emulation, of earlier directx versions. Perhaps its direct draw perhaps not.

But something is hogging teh processing power in windows8 to have such a low framerate.

When I see the specs on these computers, I laugh, I can run these games on an old Windows98 to Windows7 with some very basic and generic graphics cards. I believe that getting until someone puts a high end graphics card in a WIndows8 computer and then gets the said game to run in full FPS , only then, should they be telling someone to get a new card otherwise you are spending money on a gamble.

These games often don't need a high end card, although nice to have , this FPS drop currently is very dramatic and is a result of Windows8.

I have been scanning/looking for a solution for about 1 year and have yet to find one.

While there are many directx games having this issue, teh one I play is called
Demolition Derby and Figure 8 racing.
Nothing fancy at all.

It works on Windows95 to Windows7, and uses Microsoft Directx8.1 , with full support in Directx9 and emulation in the Vista and Windows7 directx.

Windows8 SHOULD have no issues with this game, or others, but it does, and therefor there is a change in how Windows8 version of directx is doing the emulation.

If anyone has found a game using Older Directx that is affected by the Low FPS issue on windows8 only, and has found a solution, please post the solution.

I'd hate to accept that Windows7 as the last OS that Demolition Derby and Figure8 racing will run on...There is no reason it shouldn't run full speed on Windows8

I honestly don't know much about ideal specs for gaming, but I do know that anything Intel will not go over well with gaming. I tried playing a simple game with it and I got less than 5 fps.
I also know that HP laptops aren't exactly the best for gaming, but I'm not sure about desktop computers, I assume they'd be better. I have an ASUS laptop (See my profile for some specs) and I've gotten up to 200 fps out of it. It's not too expensive either. I got it for $500, brand new.
The graphic card I use is the 512mb Radeon HD 7640g which is a dedicated memory.
Sorry I can't expand more on my ideas, I don't have many.

    Other Info
I get up to 200 FPS on average games, I picked a laptop with a decent graphics card.
I figure if a Windows95 computer with a bread and butter video card can run a game at full speed and windows7 can run the game at full speed and yet computers with windows 8 either brand new or updated from W7 run the game at 5FPS, its not about the hardware, its about the software within Windows8 and figuring out what has been changed from Windows7.
