    unable to install starcraft 1

ok..so in an effort to help a friend troubleshoot her copy of the game I dusted off the old battle chest box, slapped the core game disc in, and pressed install.

    this is what happened:

"Setup was unable to create the following directory: C\Windows

    Error 0x00000005: Access is denied.

    (C:\Files\Installer\setup\DiskUndo.cpp:471)

    Installation Aborted."

exactly the same issue as her.

now, I know that shouldnt install to windows..so I tried to specify the folder path. wrong! wont proceed with that either.

did a search for the error, got this as the first result.

the bloody disc's installer wont run for me.

What happens when you try 'run as administrator' by right clicking the installer ?

Tried running it in XP mode?

    barfs up the same errors.

about all she hasnt done is go to battlenet and grab the game client there.. she lost her original cd key and is using her brother's, which is already registered. to my knowledge this shouldnt cause any issues unless she tried to play online when installing from disc.

A game might still run on a newer OS even if it's installer might fail.

Install the game in a VM
(older OS: XP preferably). You can use VMware Player or VirtualBox.

After the game is (correctly) installed, copy the entire folder somewhere to Windows 8 (host) and run the game launcher form there. You may need to copy the game's registry entries too but this is more advanced and I don't advise it to everyone, most games run without this.

Don't try to install on W8 because of the game's installer ancient procedures used... no access to folders, old directx (5!) checks and requirements.

I play Dune 2000 which has similarities in sys requirements: Works perfectly on W8. I never installed it in W8, I have it backed up after older XP installation in a zip, extracted the game somewhere (like the D: drive) launch the main executable but first using compatibility mode: 16bit color and if you are still facing issues: Win98/ME compatibility too.

    Cheers!
