    On The Subject of Steam

Just bought a disk in supermarket, Deus Ex Human Revolution. Looks good, never played it so thought give it a go. I installed it, well, I thought I had, all I have is an icon called steam and nothing else. There is nothing to point me to the game on the disk, no setup other than this steam!!

What the hell is going on before I return disc to store.

By the looks of it (1), Deus Ex: HR is a Steamworks (2) game - i.e. it requires Steam to be able to run (for DRM purposes). Presumably you can get playing if you fire up Steam, create an account, login and launch?

I haven't bought a boxed PC game for ages, but it looks as though this is the case.

    1. Why did my retail copy of Deus Ex HR install through Steam? - GameSpot.com

If this means its only available on line - it goes back, I wanted it as a stand alone. Will check it out. Thanks

GUESSING: Steam can run in offline mode, so potentially, it needs to be online once to register it and after that you can run it offline? Generally on Steam, an internet connection isn't required, unless of course you are using the online portion of a game.

You don't actually need the disk; you need the key that came with the disk. Go to Welcome to Steam. Download and install the Steam client (green button at the top of the screen). Once you create an account and log in (it's all free), register your game. It will automatically download and install. Afterwards, you can set the game to run offline.

I've purchased loads of boxed games like this, probably nothing on the disc.

In order to play the game, you must run Steam. Once Steam is running, you will see a list of all the games you purchased, or registered through Steam. Click the game you want to play, then click Play.

If you want to start the game directly (sort of), right-click on the game and select "Create Desktop Shortcut." I say "sort of" because Steam will still run in the background.

Bottom line: In order to run the game, you must be running Steam first.

OK, good advice - and thanks. But what if I were one of those few who play games on pc's or whatever and do not have net access??? They are buying an expensive empty CD!!

I actually bought this for use on my laptop when I am on nights, most places I do not have net access
