I was just browsing through the games thread and thought of this. If I'm not mistaken CS1.6 is based on the same engine as the original Half Life and uses some of its' files, and for HL to work for me on 7/8 I had to disable Data Execution Prevention for the .exe in question (you can also turn it off entirely and will get the same effect, but it's better to leave it on for security purposes). It involves adding the .exe to the DEP exceptions list. I'm too tired to type out all the details, check this link:

Change Data Execution Prevention settings

I honestly believe my solution is the best answer, I've had this issue in the past on Win 7 and 8 and what I posted solved the issue both times.

@ AllenMoves: Hate to make this sound like a personal attack, but I would dare say your link is spam, your video is only 43 seconds long, gives no useful info on how to solve the issue, and even goes so far as to indirectly promote piracy by linking to The Pirate Bay in the description box. I have no problems with playing on private servers either, but in many cases private servers imply that piracy was involved to obtain a copy of said game. Dont get me wrong, I've pirated in the past and occassionally still do (usually when I cant pay for a software) but my copy of CS1.6 is 100% legit and bought from Steam, as were dozens of other games on my Steam account. As well as some games on Origin, GOG, GamersGate.....I generally support paying if you really like a software, to support the publisher and the devs, etc. And what you posted is really just yet another example of a bloated ego and self-aggrandizement.
