Has anyone been able to get Borderlands to successfully play on Windows 8? If so, what workarounds (if any) did you have to use? I have tried running as administrator, running in compatibility mode for XP, Vista, and 7, reinstalling the latest stable and beta graphics drivers, reinstalling VC++ redistributables, .Net framework, reinstalling the game itself, and reinstalling PhysX system software.

Either the Steam version or retail should play identically for you. You may get an error about cudart.dll or physxcudart_20.dll being missing. The solution to this is to go the the game's folder., make a copy of cudart.dll, and rename the newly copied file to physxcudart_20.dll. Also, to speed it up a bit try eliminating the intro vids that play just before the game's main menu comes up. You cant get rid of all of them but the longer ones can be skipped:

Go to C:\Users\<YourUsernameHere>\Documents\My Games\Borderlands\WillowGame\Config\
Open WillowEngine.ini
Search for StartupMovies, and then change it to:
;StartupMovies=2K_logo
;StartupMovies=Gearbox_logo
;StartupMovies=Nvidia
;StartupMovies=Loading

Save the file and exit.

Hope that helped!

Just installed it yesterday the Retail-DVD-Version and I can play it under Windows-8-Pro-WMC-x64 with the cuda-fix.

Apparently it works just fine now, I think it's because I used the WillowEngine.ini file to allow DX10, but I don't know for sure.

Using the movie skip trick above didn't work, as I still get the startup movies.

Regardless, it's fixed for me now, and for any others experiencing the issue, I have attached my WillowEngine.ini file in hopes that it may fix the issue for you. Just change its name from "WillowEngine.ini.txt" to "WillowEngine.ini"

Update:

I actually believe that the latest batch of Windows updates, most likely KB2790907, may have been what resolved the issue.
