Older games on Windows 8.

I've just done a clean installation of Windows 8, and have been re-installing my games. I've read a few comments about older games not working under Windows 8, specifically <DX9 and openGL games. This is by no means a comprehensive list, obviously, but all these games will work on Windows 8 without issues. i'll be testing more of my games over the next few weeks, and will add to this thread with those older games which work (or not).

The big thing ssems to be...have the most up-to-date drivers installed. I had horror-story after horror-story on the CP because the openGL driver support wasn't there.

And DO use the compatibility mode. it's not as good as in Windows 7, but is adequate.

Hi Wenda, nice game list.

Compatibility mode in Win8 is fine, actually better: if you get confronted with even older games and 16bit color mode then compatibility mode is the only way.

It depends on the program you apply it to but the compatibility mode got a more important job getting the lower color modes incorporated.

Lol.... I see you've got SOF2 on the list. Brings back a lot of good memories. Must have played the multiplayer "Capture the flag" modus a thousand times back in 2002-2006.

It seems ridiculous to even bother making a thread about games that work on Windows 8. If they work then they just work, there's no point in discussing them. People should be concentrated on discussing which games dont work, and possible solutions.

The user experience is important here.
For some, a couple of releases work that others don't seem to get working.
I don't know what to say: for instance I can run RA2 Yuri's Revenge without issues on Win8 but other people couldn't make it work at all... and I provided the compatibility settings needed. Still no luck for them.

So what might work for you can be difficult for others to setup and all possible questions are welcome to be answered in this case.

Yes, the user experience IS important. But it still doesn't make much sense to make a single thread just to discuss the games that do work. Any attempt to do so is insane and will fail. Do you have any idea how many games have been released since the invention of PC games? Trying to cram a list of titles that do work (complete with descriptions and discussion) into one topic is just asking for trouble. At the very least, it will be disorganized. Such a thing should have its' own dedicated subforum that is split into multiple threads. And even then there would be thousands upon thousands of threads. On the flipside, the other thing goes for games that dont work. But when a game works on a particular OS people dont tend to discuss it, they just play. But when one doesnt work they immediately go to the Web and start looking for solutions, which includes posting on forums.

That's right. I read you loud and clear.
That's why I DON'T discuss games that do work, I discuss those involved with compatibility/color mode issues to get them to work, and they might work but not on first click. Usually very old ones (to begin with those from the 90's, newer ones are easier to get going but there are always exceptions).

What is wrong with this thread? If you don't like it don't read it. There is a "Gaming" forum that this thread is part of and you can post another thread at your pleasure and on just the games you want to discuss. I ignore a lot of threads where I have no interest in the subject but don't object to other members having those threads.

@ Phone Man: I'm not trying to be an ***hole or anything even if that's what I sound like. But if I dont like something then i WILL read it, and post in the topic if I object to something. It just seems useless to try to create a SINGLE THREAD in regards to which games do/dont work on Windows 8, or any other Windows OS for that matter. I have said it before, this kind of thing should have its' own dedicated subforum within the gaming subforum, with multiple threads, preferably one for each game to discuss what doesnt and does work, and maybe a thread (or more if needed) for generalized discussion along those lines. If I were a mod I would shut this thread down, and then post a sticky stating that each game needs to be placed in its' own thread. Anyone that failed to comply would simply have their thread closed, although they would be free to repost it if they do so within acceptable guidelines. The reason I say this is because it is futile to attempt to create a topic that aims to make a complete list of games that do/dont work. That topic would eventually devolve into a disorganized mess.

In my definition if a game doesnt launch "out of the box" without issues then it falls into the '"not working/partially not working" category and are fair game for discussion. It's complicated even more because everyone has different hardware and what may work out of the box for me may not do so for you and vice versa.

That's the part where I jump in to discuss, different hardware makes it even more challenging. The best part is that you try to make a game work.

There's no need to fight the windmill:
There will always be people interested in threads like these, this threads have their place, that's why I don't bother trying to convince anyone not to post. I post when I have something useful to say.

I doubt your OS is 64bit
I have win 8.1 64bit and its incompatible with old games , as well as win 7 64bit
I played every game on 8.1 32bit when I was having it as Recoil 1998
you can get them work on 32bit windows but 64bit is incompatible ( especially giving Video adapter error) , Good luck

I'm struggling getting the pc games to open on my win 8 tablet tried changing the res down but still no luck, any advice?

I also play these games on Windows 8.1 64Bit.

Just for your information I have had no issues running Diablo 3 with expansion StarCraft 2 with Expansion and The Sims 4 in Windows 8.1. Just incase anyone wanted to know. and by the way just about every game I have ever installed and played has worked on what ever system I was using.
