hi guys,

it was Calico here (http://www.eightforums.com/gaming/5798-how-make-windows-8-work-ms-games-previous-versions.html) who pointed some of us in the right direction on how to use Win 7 X32 games in the previous releases of Win 8.

Over here the 4 users like Win 8, that aside, but my wife and daughter wants the old MS games back.

So i tried yesterday to follow the instructions you see in the URL above.

It did not work yesterday, so i retried this morning on our spare machine, and yes, i have the old games back and working on a Win 8 X64 machine.

I just copied then the MS Games file to the 32 bit Win 8 laptop, in the Program Files, since it is X86.

so no install and nothing is found in Program & Features.

Both machines work with the old Spider Solitaire, BUT i cannot get it to work on both other Win 8 X64 machines.

So any help is welcome here, whatever i do, it does not work.

thanks

Jeff

Well i guess i am on my own now, since nobody has ANY ideas......

Copied the files all over, retried from scratch some 15 times. The only possible (maybe) option is to install Win 7 , make Spider Solitaire operational and MAYBE Win 8 takes it over after a reinstall, but the risk of doing the work for NOTHING is too high.....

Registry???? Services ???? Features is not an option ????

Anything, anyone????

Thanks

Jeff

you have a perfectly fine new set of solitaire games from Microsoft as well as tons of third-party solitaire games in the Windows Store that are free.

but you want to stick to the Windows 7 ones. you're now complaining about it and want someone to solve your problem for you. people are here to try to fix problems and troubleshooting, but taking a belligerent, demanding attitude doesn't help. tinkering with things that you don't understand doesn't help either.

Well Dirtyvu, i ask this for my wife, not for me, i do not play games. She likes the older version, that's it. I am not demanding anything, not commanding anybody, but it is not easy to get answers for some problems.

Maybe my wife is like the Win 7 or XP lovers, she likes to stick to the old stuff.

But i know, it is more easy to complain about MS then solve some problem. Do not get upset, i speak in general here.

At least i try to help others, even if i do not know the right answer.

But you must admit: this is a strange situation.

I include a "prtscrn" for everybody to see that i do not lie.

PS

that i kept answering myself was for bumping the thread up, but i will stop doing so.

Well Jimbo,

already tried that but the link is gone, you get redirected and when you open the patch this is blocked by F-Secure (AV) for having a Trojan inside.

Meanwhile i include a screenshot where you can see the game open on the computer named Window and you can see the link to my pc (Speedy) from where the Spider is running. Both pc's are X64.

So again, this is strange that ONE X64 COMPUTER can run the program but not the others.

For other Spider lovers, it works fine on a 32 bit Windows 8.

Hey Jeff,

I got the archive that Jimbo mentioned and it's alright: already patched and safe.
Don't get the patch because it's not needed.

About screenshot: That's not a virus it's just (flagged) an alert because the program can modify other exe's/binary's.
Clean your temp files and delete the patch, delete quarantine... just to calm the antivirus down.

EDIT: that patch got detected here too and then I let it run in a VM to see what it does... If you have the initial Win7 games, it makes them work on Win8.
But as I said, you don't need it just the archive.

Good luck

Hopachi

OK, Hopachi,

will retry to arrange this.

But it still is strange that on 1 computer it works without having to do anything else then follow the instructions of Calico and that puzzels me.

Thanks to all who tried to help/helped. Expecially Jimbo who got me true the latest steps.

So it really works and my wife is happy.

Jeff

PS

Still it would be nice to know why 1 computer X64 did not need the patch. One X86 computer neither.

The patch worked when copying the games/DLL to the Program Files X86, not when doing so to the Program Files X64.

Correction it was possible in Program Files X64, my bad
