Windows 8 Solitaire Collection

So, this is my first post.

I've finished loading Win 8 to my wife's laptop and I'm not too happy with it thus far!

My wife really likes the old solitaire programs from previous MS Win versions. Alas, they are not available with Win 8!

So, I successfully installed Win 8 Solitaire Collection, on her newly upgraded laptop, using my account. When she logs on to her account, the Launch tile for Win 8 Solitaire Collection is nowhere to be found. How do I get it to be available under her account?

Please help. Thanks.

How to use Microsoft Games from Windows 7 in Windows 8

How to

1. Please use x86 games for Windows 8 x86 & x64 games for Windows 8 x64. Otherwise the patch will not work.
2. Copy 'Program Files\Microsoft Games' folder from the x86/x64 install.wim or a working x86/x64 installation.
3. Paste it in 'Program Files'.
4. Copy 'cardgames.dll' from system32 of a x86/x64 install.wim or a working x86/x64 installation.
5. Paste it in 'FreeCell', 'Hearts', 'Solitaire' & 'SpiderSolitaire' folder.
6. Apply the patch.
7. Done.
**For multiplayer games (Backgammon, Checkers & Spades)**
1. Copy cmncliM.dll & zgmprxy.dll from system32 & paste them in system32 of 8.
2. Copy cmncliM.dll.mui from system32\xx-xx & paste it in system32\xx-xx of 8. (xx-xx represents your os language; for me its en-us)

It was weird, but the ONLY place I was able to find cmncliM.dll.mui was in the WinSXS Folder.
But I got those Folders and Files transferred and the Windows 7 games are now working on Windows 8.

SOLITARE:

1: a single gem (as a diamond) set alone
2: any of various card games that can be played by one person

Why MS would insist that you log in with over a million other people to play SOLITARE
gets me to scratching my head in wonder.....sheeesh!

The new Microsoft Solitaire Collection is amazing. Why would she not like it? You can customize the background with your own pictures, you can customize the cards or even put pictures on them. The special effects are really cool. The new graphics and sound are great. The games play is as great as ever.

When you install a new app, the app is located on the far right of all your tiles. So just drag it toward the front of your stack of tiles (move the tile leftward).

Why would you do what windunce is saying? that's silly.

Well, what Windunce suggested really works. Old, and loved games are now available on my wife's Win 8 laptop.

As for the new Microsoft Solitaire Collection, the launch tile is available to me when I'm logged onto her machine using my user account. The MSC launch tile does not appear anywhere on her Start window when she is logged on. That is the problem I'd also like to solve.

Thanks for responding.

did you redownload the app while logged into her account?

like previous versions of Windows, each account can have different software.

Maybe this is the problem?

Personally, I don't 'LOG ON/IN' to Windows 8. I just click on my User Icon and I'm in.
Yes,I've set a local user account and there is no password associated with my local user account.

Occasionally a window will pop up asking me for my Live ID, I just click cancel
and continue on my merry way .

I have no Windows Live Account
I have no Store Account
I have no X-Box Account
I have no Windows Live Games Account.

dirty vu, could you please explain to me how I can play the Windows 8 Card Games?

In all previous versions of Windows you could play their shipped games even if you
didn't have an INTERNET access account. Sadly that no longer seems possible and I wonder why?

Just saying....

once you download the game, it's on your system and I don't you need the internet access. though I don't know who disconnects their PC from the Internet (do you hook up only for web browsing?). You don't have multiple accounts. It's all 1 Microsoft account per person.

But you can associate any email for your Microsoft account, whether it's a gmail or yahoo or outlook or hotmail or whatever account. heck, create a dummy email if you're scared.

here are the free ones I saw (but they're not the only free ones, check out the others!). The cool thing about these games is that it saves your place so if you can't finish your game in a sitting, you don't have to sweat it (i.e., you don't have to take a loss and have it stain your record):

You can totally customize the background or the cards as well as the special effects (I have cherry blossoms blowing in).

here's a standard deck set:

here's a modified set I made (it's slightly NSFW) so I'll remove it if it offends anyone. see the cherry blossoms? the animation is pretty cool:

Minesweeper is really slick. even has an adventure mode too!:

Mahjong is just as great as ever:

The Windows Store is great for a lot of free software. You guys should really try it.

And there's the rub.
I do believe that one cannot access the Store to download anything unless they
are logged into Windows 8 with a Microsoft account... OR
A Google account/Yahoo account/CompuServe account etc etc.

If you log in with a local account the Store isn't accessible.

Yes, on initial log-in I am 'online'. I download my financial stuff, browse a few forums and tweak sites
and then I single click on my "Ehternet Properties" Start Screen icon and choose Disable. If I need to get
back online, I simply single click on that same icon and choose Enable.

I already is one :) Oh, dummy email. Ok, I'll do that and go 'Shopping'.
Because I am quite interested to see if I can play those games "Offline" [With a Local Account]
I'll let you know the result as soon as possible.

THANKS

Missing Features...

Ok, I think I understand the reasoning behind MS decision.

Originally the card games were included as a training device to get
users acquainted with that "new-fangled mouse". Mission accomplished.

Now those games have been moved from Windows 8 and onto the X-Box site
to get users used to downloading Apps from their Store.

Enough about that, now onto replying to your post.
===========================
Initially there were quite a few 'pop-ups' about signing in and stuff about
agreement things, but I successfully installed the card games.

I rarely played those old card games, but like Al14, my wife plays about
Solitaire about 20 times per day.

She tried the new "Klondike" and agreed it looks "pretty".
But she cringed when her old right click/throw up playable cards feature
no longer worked. So it's back to the old "Solitaire" for her.

And yes, on my non logged-in account I am able to play a few of the XBox Games. VERY few :)

This is not true. Yes, you can be logged in with a local account and access the store without issue.
I am doing it now.

Yes, You can play while not connected to the internet

When the Solitare Collection starts it will ask you to login,, just hit cancel and you can play all day long.
You do not have to sign in to play, weather connected to the internet or not.

the only feature I miss from the old version of solitaire is the keyboard shortcut, ctrl+z to undo a card move. now you have to hit the undo button. which makes sense for a touch user. but not for a KBM user.

Check this site. It uses the above procedure but in a windows install package. Just install and I got my Mahjong game back. Now I can go 100% to Windows 8.

Microsoft Games for Windows 8

It also has Game Explorer just like Window 7. I only installed 3 games for now.

I have copied and installed Windows games folder from Windows 7 as well as cardfiles.dll.
I have no idea about a 'PATCH' or how it works.
In a specific site I found a hex line that needed to be changed so that Windows 8 will not stop Solitare or other window games from opening. I downloaded a hex editor and when I attempted to find that specific line for Solitare.exe, it could not be found. I also tried another hex editor and that one could not find that line either.

I really want to use the Windows 7 Solitare and really could use someone to help and assist me.

Yea listen to that guy above! The 'ol PBXer himself, Phone Man

Same top level domain, but a few months later made a world of difference.

They took the patcher and incorporated it into an installer program.
That makes it infinitely easier, foolproof so to speak.

The only problem that you MAY have is that you may have created a few files and folders already.

But with a little luck' the installer will simply overwrite them and you will be good to go!

Good Luck!

Phone Man & Windunce,

Thank you for your instructions and suggested link to patch. I followed each extremely carefully. I used 7 Unzip to extract files from downloaded patch. Copied Microsoft Games from Windows 7 as well as Cardgames.dll on a flash drive.
I installed them on Windows 8. Installed Microsoft Games in C:\Program Files and added Cardgames.dll to each game.
I selected Windows 86 from the downloaded Patch and ran it. After it was completed I attempted to open Solitare and it only flashed a quick window of Command Prompt. I attempted a compatibility test and the results were that it was not compatible.

Did I do something wrong and or do you have any other suggestions. Please advise.

Thank you so much for your quick responses.

Much the same problem only that mine locks up after playing a few games, also it seems to run very slowly, may dual Linux Mint again just for the games.
Also makes me think about swapping my Asus Transformer and Galaxy S2 for win 8 devices.
Hope there are fixes issued quickly.

I am starting to suspect that the patch suggested is not changing the Hex code 7D 04 83 65 FC 00 33 C0 83 7D FC 01 0F 94 C0 from the first 7D to EB as suggested in other sites. I attempted to do a manual change with a Hex Editor and each time I do a search in the Hex Editor it say's it cannot find that line in as an example 'Solitare.exe'. Therefore it cannot change the way Windows 8 see's it. Also, after completing the installation of the patch it did in fact enter all of the games on the Windows 8 'START' menu. However after selecting i.e. Solitare icon, it directed it to the desktop but never opened.
