Hey, see if you can help me to find a driver for this scanner and that works in Windows 8 x64, Windows 7 x64 had before and got it to work doing what they said here: Epson Perfection 1640SU - Driver Problem - Windows 7 Forums

I was able to modify the Epson Perfection 2400 Photo driver to work with my 1640SU under Windows 7 x64.
Here's the driver:
Epson America, Inc. - Downloading File Page

Open it with 7-Zip (or whatever you use), extract the file named _winzip_, extract the files contained in_winzip_ using 7-Zip (or whatever you use).

Open Es27.inf and replace all instances of USB\VID_04B8&PID_011B with USB\VID_04B8&PID_010A and save and close the file.

Now go to the Device Manager, right click your scanner, Update Driver and Software...
Browse my computer..... and use the folder you extracted _winzip_ (with the now modified Es27.inf) to.

That should do it, worked great for me.

I tried to install the same driver on Windows 8 and I get this error:
escaner error.JPG
as you will see, use Spanish.

Thanks and I hope you can help me.

On October 2009, when I bought my Win 7 laptop I found the same solution (Epson Perfection 1640SU - Driver Problem - Windows 7 Help Forums) than you and I finally could install my EPSON Perfection 1640SU in Windows 7 x64

Last October I upgraded (not clean installation) my PC to Windows 8 x64 and today (five months later; I dont use much the scanner) I have realized that the scanner and the drivers I used in W7 x64 don´t work in Windows 8 x64.

So, same problem than you and same error screenshoot.

Have you finally found any solution?

Due to the low penetration rate of Windows 8 there´s not still a solution in Internet for the problem of this model with W8 x64.

Regards.

PS: Te he intentado escribir por privado pero creo que el foro no deja :p

...wear tomorrow as I did.

 Don´t understand.

Will you let me know tomorrow?

You have to go to:

- CONFUGURACIÓN
-Change PC configuration

-UTILITY
- Home Advanced
- "Restart Now"

- Troubleshooting
-Advanced Options
- Startup Settings
reboot

Once restarted:
7) Disable the mandatory use of signed drivers

and once done, we will let you install the driver, as we did with Windows 7.

Hope this helps as I have served my. Greetings.

If you want to install the EPSON Perfection 1640SU scanner in Windows 8 you must follow TWO steps:

FIRST STEP

Go to CONFIGURATION
(last icon of the Charm bar of Windows 8)
Select Change PC configuration (at the bottom of the lateral screen)

Go to UTILITY
Select Home Advanced
Select "Restart Now"

Once in the blue screen:
Select Troubleshooting
Select Advanced Options
Select Startup Settings
Select Reboot

Once the computer has restarted:
In the blue screen you'll see press F7 (responds to the option "Disable the mandatory use of signed drivers")

SECOND STEP

Once first step has been done, Windows 8 will let you install the driver of EPSON Perfection 1640SU scanner as pcspecialist explains in the post #9 of this thread (the guide is for Windows 7 but it´s the same for Windows 8):

This works as 64bit twain driver, Windows 8 & its free

Go to the following Epson site & download file 12180 (if the link doesn't open just highlight and paste into your browser):

Epson America, Inc. - Downloading File Page

Using Winzip or whatever, extract and install the file as per default settings.

Connect you Epson Scanner and go to Device Manager in Control Panel. The scanner will be shown but will have a marker against it. Right click and select update driver.

Select "Browse my Computer" then "Let me pick list of device drivers from my computer" (don't select or let the computer search for drivers because it will not find any).

Choose "Imaging Devices" and then click "Have Disk".

Navigate to the folder that you have just unzipped and you will be offered a selection of Epson Scanners. Choose the Epson 2400 and select install. Ignore all the warning etc that Microsoft throw up.

The Device Manager will now show that you have an Epson 2400 scanner installed rather than the Epson 1640SU but that doesn't matter as your 1640SU will work perfectly well with the twain driver installed - including on 64bit systems like Windows 8.

That's it and best of all; its free.

It's always good to know another procedure for installing this "old" but still functional scanner.

Thanks Stev.

I can confirm that the "replace all instances of USB\VID_04B8&PID_011B with USB\VID_04B8&PID_010A" trick (described in the previous posts of this thread) works in Windows 10 too.

I'm using without problems the EPSON 1640 SU scanner (with the help of the Scanner app hosted in Windows store) in my Windows 10. Hope this helps.

Long life to our scanners!!!

Regards.
