Either jumping cursor or touchpad led constantly on

I have installed the latest Windows 8 90-day trial on my HP Pavilion dv6. When I'm trying to type anything in Microsoft Excel, the cursor is jumping all around from one column into another. I downloaded touchpad drivers from HP website, but this didn't fix the problem, so I tried the latest version of the drivers directly from Synaptics website. The cursor stopped jumping, but the touchpad led was constantly on, which was even more annoying. I tried to install older drivers, but the installer keeps telling me I haven't reboot my system after having the old driver removed, although I have done it a dozen of times. Any ideas how I could solve this problem?

I installed Windows 8 RP on a friends Acer Iconia tablet and had similar issues with a jumpy mouse making it very hard to work with. Upgrading the driver didn't help but upgrading the Touch Panel firmware resolved the issue. Perhaps you need a firmware update also.
