    300 dollar WinRT tablets possible...

Windows RT tablets could start at $300, according to Lenovo executive | The Verge

Well, according to Lenevo, WinRT tablets might start at 300 dollars; at least the ones built by them.

So, this kind of means for 100 dollars extra, you can ditch a 7 inch android tablet for a 10 inch tablet PC with Office 2013, the Desktop, and sleek metroness!

It's really going to come down to application support and whether this tablet will have the apps that people really want. From what I have read, the Office 2013 on the RT will be a bit stripped down to ensure good battery life and to work on the ARM platform...so who knows exactly what that entails.

The desktop on RT isn't very exciting at all, since it won't run any 3rd party software. So, I don't count this as an advantage.

A 10" tablet is kinda klunky for carrying around. I'm not sure that's a sure fire win over a 7" tablet. That's up to the buyer I guess.

I count the Desktop as a plus.

For 300 dollars, you have an interface to drap, copy, cut, and paste files around from your SSD to a flash or external hard drive through USB. I don't know for sure, but some android tablets at that price don't even have a USB port. The ipad can't do that either. Yes, Office 2013 will have some things cut out to improve battery life, but honestly, if you're buying a WinRT tablet, bets are that you're not too concerned with that.

But yes, appage, apps are what counts with Windows. That's the WHOLE reason why it's used over mac. But, as it's Windows, that means developers will be there. It'll start out slow of course, but in the long run, it might actually be worthwhile to have a WinRT tablet.

You might have missed my point. With PC's and such, they are often used because of the wide variety of apps.

However, in the smartphone world and tablet arena, at least today, Apple has the apps many people want. I've started volunteering running sound boards and such and the apps are there for the iPhone and iPad. Even got apps to run a Yamaha M7CL board, but nothing for Droid or Windows devices. Went to a picnic outing with the kids a few weeks ago and saw a guy flying a radio control quadricopter and was using his iPad to control the device. At the place I am volunteering, admist all of their high end audio gear, they have numerous rack mounted iPod docs which they use regularly and it uses the docking port to ensure line level inputs....but there are no docks for Android or Windows devices.

I can't really see what a 7 inch tablet has over the latest generation of Smart phones anyway apart from a slightly larger screen. The latest Samsung and HTC phones will just blow away any tablet in the universe as far as I can see -- a tablet seems a totally obscure device which is a complete compromise between a desktop and a phone -- and any audiophiles out there will know that buying "separates" always yielded better results than going for the "compromise single unit".

Once these have got over "Toy status" lets see what happens next. The mega quality smart phones haven't been out long but I'll be very interested in seeing the price of APPLE stock (Epic code : AAPL) in say 12 months time --- Ipods are now redundant -- nearly all phones have decent music players in them, Ipads looking a bit dated and the Iphone looks positively "Dinosaur Technology" compared with HTC / SAMSUNG latest products (and I haven't seen the upcoming Windows phone either).

As for Office 2013 -- assuming you use a tablet outdoors somewhere -- with that white background and the still problematic area of the modern incredibly good screens being decently visible in bright sunlight -- forget it !!!. (I still have an old fashioned Motorola Razer phone for use in bright sunlight for "Making calls" -- the smartphones DO have a problem in bright sunlight as do the tablets too.

Phablets, they don't have an edge over a smartphone other than screen size. Take a look at ipad. When there's an app available, the list of platforms goes: android, iphone, and ipad.

Now a tablet PC on the other hand...

But I should say, my Nokia Lumia 900's ClearBlack screen has been proven to have the BEST readability outdoors in the sun than the iphone or any other smartphone, even with white as the background in Mail or Office or even with white as the theme background. FYI.

    Hi there
haven't yet seen these - but if they fix the readability problem they will be a winner. Where I live usually readability in the sun hasn't been the major issue but working this summer in Europe where finally we've got some decent weather - then I noticed the problem - so I'm glad I kept my old phone as well.

I know Ipads don't read well out of doors even in moderate sunlight.

If I hadn't of got my Samsung phone I could be interested in a Windows phone -- depends on size of screen, weight, thickness etc.

I'm not too bothered if there aren't 20 trillion apps out there -- there will be enough decent one's around and for information Google and Google maps are still there !!!.

I might cajole my work to get me a separate work phone so I can try one-- but I WILL NOT HAVE A BLACKBERRY -- to most of us here the Blackberry is a symbol of 21st Century slavery where the users of these devices are tethered to an office 24 hrs a day.

    Cheers

YOU, would consider a Windows Phone from Nokia? I thought you were a dismisser of Nokia?

But yeah, the model that you would be able to find where you're at is the Nokia Lumia 800, it's just a smaller version of the 900 but still has the same hardware.

Personally, even with the display on automatic brightness, my 900 is plenty readable in ALL light settings. Colors just pop!

It's rumored that Nokia is going to show off Windows Phone 8 running on their new WP 8 handsets next month. I'm hoping their PureView camera technology makes it onto a nice looking phone soon....
