External hard drive disconnecting/connecting

I've had this problem for quite some time but now it has got a lot worse.

I don't know what drivers I should check. I have clicked on 'update driver software' but it says it has the latest driver.

I'm sure I've read that there is a problem with usb 3.0 and Intel?

How do I know if I have the latest Intel driver?

I have uninstalled the driver for the harddrive, restarted the laptop but it's still the same.

Is the drive powered or does it get its power from usb? Have you tried a usb2 port it sounds more like a power issue

Yes, it gets its power from usb, but yesterday I had two of the same external hard drives connected for over two hours and had no problem. I don't understand why it was really bad a few days ago yet yesterday there was no problem?
