Solved How to update to Intel version 10.x chipset drivers?

I'm getting ready to upgrade my main computer from an LGA 1066 motherboard to an LGA 2011-V3 motherboard / CPU / RAM and I know from past experience that the Intel version 10 chipset drivers setup program will not update existing drivers to version 10.x drivers.

In the past 9.x and below you could get the drivers in a zip format and extract them and then it was somewhat of a manual process to open device manager and go to each individual piece of Intel hardware and right click it and select Update Driver Software / Browse My Computer / browse to the directory where the inf and cab files were and if there was a newer available driver Windows would find and install it.

With these 10.x chipset drivers all you can get is the setup.exe and there doesn't seem to be a way to get it to update the existing drivers to newer ones.

I even tried extracting anything that's contained inside the setup.exe file but all I get is a bunch of files like "0", "u24", "u42", "u84" etc and there's just no inf and cab files like there used to be. Is there any way to update to the 10.x chipset drivers?

I've never had an issue with the Intel motherboard chipset drivers with Win 8 and above. When I installed Windows (or even when I changed hardware and used the same hard drive and OS) the correct chipset drivers were installed by Windows.

I'll give it a try but if I recall the last time when I tried this instead of genuine Intel drivers what I got is Microsoft signed drivers and sub-par performance and when I ran the Intel chipset 10.x installer it ran but did not replace or update the Microsoft drivers with Intel drivers.

Which left me with an expensive computer that wasn't performing anywhere near where it was supposed to. I believe what I had to do was backup and wipe and reinstall the operating system in order to get the Intel drivers installed which is what I hope to avoid this time.

I'll let you know how I make out.

The Microsoft drivers probably were the latest from Intel. Microsoft doesn't make their own motherboard chipset drivers, they supply drivers from Intel.

I don't have an example right now but I seem to remember that in Device Manager a slew of Intel devices had drivers that on the driver tab said "Driver Provider: Microsoft" and "Driver Date: x/xx/2006" or some ridiculously old date like that and that nothing I tried could get those drivers updated with newer Intel signed drivers.

That was a while ago like at least two years so I'll see what happens and let you know when I swap my existing 1st generation LGA 1066 motherboard and a 980x with the LGA 2011-V3 and i7-6850K.

I have a 6 month old desktop that I built using an ASUS Z170 motherboard and i7 6700K CPU. Windows 10 installed the correct Intel motherboard chipset drivers. The ASMedia USB 3.0 controller is listed in the Device Manager as an ASMedia driver. The Intel USB 3.0 controller lists a Microsoft driver but I suspect its actually an Intel driver supplied to Microsoft.

Others list the Intel driver, e.g.:

Ok, first I'm posting here because I'm using Windows 8.1 not Windows 10.

I did what I said and swapped the old motherboard for this new x99 motherboard with a Broadwell E CPU and while it went better than I expected after running the 10.1.1.42 chipset drivers (which support the x99 chipset) and rebooting I still have 61 assorted devices under "Other devices" in device manager that no drivers have been installed for:
Screen Shot 08-25-17 at 11.23 AM.JPG
these devices are assorted Intel pieces of hardware that for some reason the chipset installer did not install drivers for, here's the device ID's for the first few items:
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_6F98&SUBSYS_6F988086&REV_01
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_6FAA&SUBSYS_6FAA8086&REV_01
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_6FAC&SUBSYS_6FAC8086&REV_01
if I right click on any of these devices and select "Search automatically for updated driver software" all I get is "Windows was unable to install your Base System Device" and "Windows could not find driver software for your device".

How do I get proper device drivers installed for these items?

I've done the same type of install on Win 8 and didn't have any problem.
Did you run the Motherboard vendor's driver install?

As far as I can tell from researching some of the hardware that didn't have drivers installed, it seems like it's mostly hardware that's usually associated with servers and this Asus motherboard is not a server class motherboard. So I found that Intel has a separate driver package for servershttps://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/26859/Intel-Server-Chipset-Driver-for-Windows-?v=t and that seemed like it did the trick and now all hardware has the correct Intel drivers.
