What makes a driver go bad?

Yesterday I was asked to help a friend who suddenly couldn't get into the internet. This was the first time I'd seen this computer, so I didn't know its history. All I can say is that it was an HP notebook running Windows 8.1. There was a red X over the network icon in the systray, and no networks in the area were displayed. To keep a long frustrating story short, after checking the obvious settings. I checked the device manager, and saw a yellow exclamation mark on the wireless adapter driver. I took the "Update Driver" option, luckily found the location of the driver on the HD, and all was good again :D but what I'd like to know is, why was the driver working fine for years, then suddenly "died on the vine"?
