Yesterday I was asked to help a friend who suddenly couldn't get into the internet. This was the first time I'd seen this computer, so I didn't know its history. All I can say is that it was an HP notebook running Windows 8.1. There was a red X over the network icon in the systray, and no networks in the area were displayed. To keep a long frustrating story short, after checking the obvious settings. I checked the device manager, and saw a yellow exclamation mark on the wireless adapter driver. I took the "Update Driver" option, luckily found the location of the driver on the HD, and all was good again but what I'd like to know is, why was the driver working fine for years, then suddenly "died on the vine"?
