Laptop automatically goes to sleep.

Hey everyone.

My laptop sometimes automatically goes to sleep(very fast sleep). It happens very randomly, and I have checked the all the "sleep" options in the power management menu. When it goes to sleep, I can wake it up again by pressing the power button, but then it again goes to sleep in a few minutes(within 5-10 minutes). So, I again wake it up, and it again goes back to sleep within the same time. This continues to happen until I remove the USB hub from my port.

So, when I remove the USB hub, I can wake it up again by pressing the power button. Then the issue is gone. Now I can connect the USB hub again, and everything works fine, but the issue comes back again the next day. I can again remove the USB hub to fix things, but it has become an annoyance to do it every day. So I am looking forward to a permanent solution.

Some additional information(please let me know if I need to provide anything else)-

About the USB hub that's connected to my laptop:- I have connected an external keyboard, and an external mouse to it.

My laptop specs-Asus K450JN, Win 8.1 64 bit ,1 TB HDD, i7 4710HQ, 2.5 GHZ(quad core), 8GB ram, Nvidea 840m, Intel HD 4600Any help is much appreciated. Thanks

Are you saying it goes to sleep while you are using it?

And just to make sure everyone is on the same page, while a "PC" is technically any "personal computer", generally speaking, a "PC" is considered a desktop (or tower) computer as opposed to a laptop/notebook computer.

So you say the USB hub is connected to your "PC", can I assume you mean it is connect to the laptop that keeps going to sleep?

The only reason a laptop should go to sleep while you are using it is when running on battery and the charge has dropped critically low. Then the laptop will automatically save your place and go to sleep. You normally get some sort of warning this will happen, but with a weak battery, it may cross that threshold so quickly, it just goes to sleep without warning. So what is the status of your battery when this happens?

Is this a self-powered USB hub (has its own power supply)? Or does it get its power from the USB port? I recommend the use of self-powered hubs only.

According the specs I found for that K50IN, it has 4 USB ports. What happens if you use the keyboard and mouse in those ports and don't use the USB hub at all?

Thanks for the reply.

Yep, this topic is all about my laptop. I have edited the original post and removed the word "PC".

The laptop *never* goes to sleep when I am not using it. I usually remove the USB hub when I am not using the laptop.

My laptop is plugged in most of the time. I rarely use laptop on battery. And whenever the issue happened, my laptop was plugged in. The USB hub I am using is *not* self powered.

With this laptop(its K450JN), I only use one USB port and the USB hub is connected to it(I have 3 USB ports in total, one of them is USB 3.0). The issue happens very rarely. Since my last post, I haven't faced the issue again. But I am very sure that it will come back. Anyways, I will use the other USB ports instead of the hub, and see if the issue comes back.

Currently I am trying to recreate the issue. I don't know if it can be related, but I often change the place of my (external)keyboard and (external)mouse while using the laptop(but not the laptop itself). And out of the few times this issue happened, once or twice it happened while I was doing that.

I also use VMware workstation most of time when I use my laptop.

Also, I have turned on the event viewer since my last post.

And sorry for my poor english.

Okay, that's a problem but I was asking if it goes to sleep while you are using it?

Anyways, I will use the other USB ports instead of the hub, and see if the issue comes back.
It the problem does not return, that would suggest a problem with the hub. So wait and see and hopefully that is it.

Yep. It goes to sleep only while using it.

The issue just came back. Unfortunately event viewer was off at that time. But I just turned it on and it still shows logs of what happened.

In the event viewer, it shows this message.

And now that I remember it, it happened while I was typing something with external keyboard. But my external keyboard doesn't have a power/sleep button. Also, I am 100% sure that I din't touch the "windows" key in the keyboard(AFAIK, the shortcut key to go to sleep mode starts with the "windows" key)

And this time was without the hub?

Hmmm, yeah it says Sleep Reason: Button or Lid. I assume the notebook lid was wide open so it should not be that. Even if you hit the Windows key, you would have to hit another key after that to put it to sleep. And beside, when you hit the Windows key, it seems you would have seen the start menu open up.

Many keyboards are programmable or come with preprogrammed keys. So you might look that. And as seen here, a keyboard shortcut might have been created sometime in the past.

I was not using the hub. I am sure that I haven't created any shortcut keys.

Since I don't look at keyboard while typing, sometimes I type wrong characters, so I might have pressed some other keys. After googling some information on my keyboard model, although the keyboard doesn't have a "power"/"sleep" button, it seems to have a sleep key as per the online store pages

This is strange. If there are some keys that can cause the laptop to sleep, then the keys are not mentioned anywhere.

I am at a loss. I cannot see it being the keyboard itself if it works fine otherwise. You might uninstall any drivers and associated programs for that keyboard and reboot then see what happens.

Are those buttons above the number pad, or just lights?

I don't remember installing any drivers for my keyboard. Sometimes my keyboard buttons work like crazy. (By crazy I mean, one key being pressed 2-3 times even though I only pressed it once) other times, it works 100% fine. I bought this keyboard a few months ago. Those are lights above the numpad. Three lights(numpad lock, scroll lock and caps lock).

Do you suggest replacing keyboard/USB hub?

That could be part of the problem - if one key sticks and you press another, perhaps that combination of key presses is putting it to sleep. You might try another keyboard though I assume you did not have this problem with the notebook's own keyboard.

You seem to have eliminated the hub as the problem - though again, I normally recommend self-powered hubs.
