Microsoft Sculpt Mobile Mouse not working

    Hi all,

I have recently purchased a Microsoft Sculpt Mobile Mouse as found here:

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00CKNJBX2

It doesn't work on my Windows 8.1 Pro machine (desktop) but works fine on my Windows 10 machine (laptop).

I've tried various USB ports but no joy.

I've installed StartIsBack (StartIsBack: real start menu for Windows 8 and Windows 10) so that may have something to do with it.

Any help would be most appreciated.

StartIsBack should have nothing to do with this. Have you installed the drivers for that mouse? Note it still should work with basic mouse features with the native drivers built into Windows without the specific drivers. So that points to the USB ports. Are you sure they work?

I see. There was no driver CD packaged in with the mouse.

I'm using a Logitech mouse via USB and that works fine. Before that I used another Microsoft mouse and that worked fine too.

I also have external hard drives plugged into the USB ports and they work fine too.

    Really strange...

It is strange. I don't know what to suggest since the mouse works fine on a different computer, and other USB devices work fine in the desktop.

I guess if me, I would uninstall all mouse drivers, shutdown Windows, unplug the computer from the wall for about 15 second to remove all standby power, plug in that mouse, and power up, cross fingers and see what happens.

Thanks. Will give that a try.

I'm using a fairly old Dell XPS desktop (manufactured around 2007). I wonder if the USB port isn't up for it as the technology may have changed.

Shouldn't matter. For one, USB is designed to be forward and backward compatible - at least in theory. That said, if they were different versions, that theory vs real world conflict typically only happens when massive amounts of data needs to pass through the interface - like with an attached drive moving many megabits/seconds of data.

A mouse is moving just a tiny amount of data representing a single dot in a simple two-dimensional (X-Y grid) plane. It's not even a drop in a bucket - more like a drop in the ocean.

That's not to say there's not some physical damage, but technically there's no reason for any compatibility issues. But physical damage would not explain why other devices work with that computer in that same USB port, or why that mouse works on a different computer. So I am stumped. Sorry.
