    run a CHKDSK /B /X on a HDD

I intend to run a CHKDSK /B /X on a HDD (from another machine) attached to a Win 8.1 system.

I read this a few times but not sure IF/ WHEN & WHY & HOW should I leverage these switches. I can read whats written, but.. Not really clear.

    • /scan - Can only be used with a NTFS disk. Runs a online scan on the volume.
      • /forceofflinefix - Can only be used with a NTFS disk. Must be used with /scan switch. Bypass all online repair; all defects found are queued for offlne repair (ex: "chkdsk /spotfix").
      • /perf - Can only be used with a NTFS disk. Must be used with /scan switch. Uses more system resources to complete a scan as a fast as possible. This may have a negative performance impact on other tasks running on your system.

    • /spotfix - Can only be used with a NTFS disk. Runs spot fixxing on the volume.

Is the disk a data disk not in use not a live windows disk? /b /x dismounts the drive so if its a in use disk windows would die and you would loose connection. why cant you run this on the pc if there is doubt about the drive your better running a disk test downloaded from the makers of the disk website

Its a Win 2003 old disk attached to a Win 8.1 machine. So i guess online offline wont matter much.

What and how does on leverage the NEW CHKDSK parameters I posted?

Generally chkdsk is only for the file structure it's not reliable for testing bad sectors that's a job for test disk from the makers

You don't need to run those. Did you run chkdsk /? to see what /b and /x do?

Just run chkdsk /r and follow the prompts. Chkdsk will automatically determine the file system used and select NTFS. And it will prompt you to allow the drive to be scanned during the next boot (before it mounts).

I know about all the older options like /R. Just wanted insight on the new options posted above.

Those new options were added in W8 and are still in W10. Here's a pretty good tutorial explaining what they do.
