Can I do without AMD drivers

I have to update it every month and often I forget to do so (I get no reminders at all) and often I have to make sure I have the right kind. I installed Crimson 16.1.1 hotfix today and for whatever reason, according to my device manager, an old version of 13 or something like that was installed instead. So installing AMD for an update seems to be a pain in the neck and it's driving me crazy. By default, my computer have microsoft basic display adapter. Can I just use that one and do without AMD at all? Btw, the version of that was from way back in 2006. It's surprising my PC is still working with that one that old lol. I only just watch videos, a lot of youtube and I don't do a lot of gaming. Mainly games from Facebook like Candy Crush and Criminal Case. I'm just tired of dealing with AMD so I was wondering if it was possible to just use microsoft basic display adapter.

I've installed Windows 8.1 on MANY PC's that have AMD cpu's and ????? video cards. Some were as old as ten years.
Windows 8.1 has a great set of Compatible Drivers for all sorts of hardware, even add on cards like a USB 3.0 card. And printers too.
It even installs drivers for my Epson printer.

So why are you laboring over "Drivers"? Put your efforts to work elsewhere, doing something more constructive.
Windows was never designed for the user to worry about drivers. If something works on a driver this week, it will work with the same driver next week, or next month, or next year. Eh?

Good Luck,

Um, because I get BSODs when I don't update my display drivers and I keep getting them every time AMD update their display drivers and I don't install them. They update them like every month and don't work for my PC if they're not updated. It's ridiculous. They don't need to update them that often. If I can keep old display drivers without getting BSODs then that would be great.

Liz81,

I'm sorry to be so crude, you can get some answers...

but what in God's green earth are you talking about??

(If I understand what you wrote correctly, and please tell me if I'm misunderstanding...)

you think you have to update your video driver every month?

What kind of computer do you even have that you think you have to update your video driver every month and if you forget you get BSOD's!?

Lord we have another poltergeist again.. ha

I'm sorry but why don't you tell us what computer you have and what video card you have and maybe there might be an answer..

(usually when you buy a computer it either comes with a built-in Display (like intelHD4600 etc..) or a dedicated Display Graphics card.. (like Geforece Nvidia or yes, AMD )...

take a close look at what YOU wrote again here.. and explain.. and then tell us the exact model computer you have..

I have to update it every month and often I forget to do so (I get no reminders at all) and often I have to make sure I have the right kind. From her msinfo32.nfo in one of her BSOD threads. The top link specs coincide with what is showing in her logs.

Thank you, Derek, for saving me from the trouble. No need for that kind of tone from the other two posters. I come here for help and what do I get? Rudeness. I never said I forget I get BSODs. I said I forget to update the drivers and I feel like I need to because if I don't, then I get a BSOD so once I've updated, the BSODs stop until another update is released at amd.com. I agree, it is ridiculous to have to do this every month because I never had such a problem like this with an old computer but it is what it is. If I didn't get a BSOD every month or every time amd.com released something new then this wouldn't keep on happening. They're always releasing a new revision. Something like this
Legacy

Edited: Well I just did the testing and found that I actually needed Radeon HD 7600, (googled the version number) not 8400. Strange because on amd.com, if you download something for 7600 then they listed Crimson Edition 16.1.1. Well, guess I'll have to try it then. Thanks!

Liz81, I also thought it was rude that you don't list anything and then ask for help.. that's where I was coming from..

It's kinda like some guy walks into a Clinic and says to the Nurse, "it hurts.. it hurts" and the Nurse looks at the guy but doesn't know what hurts or where to look..

but Now I see you have been posting before but this thread just started with the [DEL]info [/DEL]lack of info in the beginning.. so .. anyway..

So is that your model computer or not posted above? the actual model # / serial..

if it is then it might be time to look for a "factory reset" if you don't mind losing all and anything you have saved on your HP all-in-one BSOD computer... and that would give you the first original Display driver back when you bought it..

and Unless HP forces you to update the driver for display, just deny it anytime it asks you or there may even be a setting to stop checking for updates..

Unfortunately I don't use one of those HP All-in-Ones.. But I have read and heard of nothing but problems.. so it appears they seem to not be out long enough to be stable..?

Yeah, that's the one, thanks. I suppose I'm going to have to depend on HP's website rather than amd.com (like the test in the link that was just given to me) to make sure I got the right kind of driver and the revision number. Amd.com could be the reason why I keep getting the BSODs, I don't know. Good to know that I don't have to keep on checking for updates for the driver. It's quite annoying. As far as the All-in-Ones not being out long enough to be stable, that could be it.

I don't know what testing you did but you do not have a 7600, this is from your system info file,

The same thing listed in the top link I posted above. It is an integrated chip.

Guys, thanks for the videos. Good to know if I ever need to use them and I'm relieved from the last video that you do not need a CD or a USB because the stupid store who sold me this PC did not provide me with one.

Anyway, I went to the links I was given (from the hp website) and was told to reinstall the amd driver which was an old one. What is wrong with hp? An old driver???
2.jpg

That just gave me problems. My PC screen flickered again and I got this
Untitled.jpg

I did this by seeing this
1.jpg

Sure didn't help at all. HP is certainly not keep up to date on the display drivers at all. In fact, that was the old version that was installed when I tried to install Crimson Edition 16.1.1 Hotfix. Now I'm reading about how people are having problems with it. Really, AMD? AMD released a version that gave people the old version or just problems?? The Beta version of 16.1.1. is not installing for some reason. So I just posted about this on the amd.com website so we'll see what they say. But it's still ridiculous to get BSOD every time a new revision is released (which is about every month). Really hating amd and now hp, too. I'm ready to just use the windows basic display adapter and forget about amd. Only thing is when the display goes to sleep or idle while using windows basic display adapter, the screen isn't totally dark and you can see the cursor, still and it's in my bedroom where I sleep! So I guess I'll just have to shut down my computer every night.

You bought a HP product that hopefully they shipped out the HP Factory doors that turns on and works as it should.. (well for Hp Standards anyway..)

therefore, I recommend you actually do the HP Restore (apparently without CD) and restore your computer back to when you first bought it..

You will lose everything on your computer.. your saved documents/photos/music/videos/ even bookmarks from the internet etc..

Plus you need to see that you are able to use the restore function anyway..

So just in my opinion, I would (you have 2 options) :

1.a) Backup everything you think you actually created on the computer - Music/photos/text.. anything you saved or downloaded that you want.. save it to an external hard drive or USB .. - $12-129 for different types storage on Amazon.. (ask if you need to see which ones.)

smaller usb -
Amazon Best Sellers: Best USB Flash Drives

bigger.. external (but still pretty small) Drives..
Amazon Best Sellers: Best External Hard Drives

or

1.b)
Another option , if you don't want to manually backup your files yourself, is - you can save your computer right now before you touch anything so you can always go back to what you are on right now with all your documents/music/photos .. everything using a program called Macrium Reflect Free.. yes it's free..

here is another ... video... ( it's not that fun, I can find you a better one if you want... ) but this is the idea how easy it is to use it.. and then you have a backup you can always use to get back exactly what you have right now in front of you as of 2/3/2016..

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ct_9qmbf3aA

2. then after you created "restore media recovery CD/USB" and the actual Backup "image" in Macrium,

then you Do the HP videos above about factory restore... and viola! if you don't like it after the HP factory restore, you just easily restore that "backup macrium" image you created in step 1.B. - and then your HP all in one is right back to where you are with the BSOD display stuff going on..

Thank you.

Windows update just installed AMD back on my computer and it's a different version than HP gave me. I have to wonder if that's the version my PC had in the first place. Only reason why I got an update or a different version is because the very first time I had a problem with my graphics driver since getting this computer, some idiot told me to just go to amd.com and get the latest version of AMD. Didn't say anything about windows update. So since I did that, I kept getting the BSOD and someone would keep telling me to go to amd.com and get the latest drivers, meaning I'd have to do that every month. Such a pain in the butt! The hp website even installed a different version than windows update did (and so far, the one windows update gave me is working fine but I might be speaking too soon) and the one hp gave me gave me that flickering and message about the amd stopped responding and have recovered.

So the version I actually needed that windows update installed on my computer was 13.301.1001.0. I did not need anything that amd.com provided like Crimson Edition 16.1.1 or whatever. It's way different than what windows update put on my computer and some people kept on telling me to go to amd.com and get a new update instead of maybe uninstalling and reinstalling it through the device manager or windows update. I don't know why I had a problem in the very first place. Perhaps it was a corrupted file when it installed from windows update or windows update didn't install it correctly a long time ago or something. It's a version from December 20, 2014. Yes, it's a bit old but that's what windows update installed. I've seen versions newer than that but if that's the one that works that won't give me more BSODs then I'll take it. The fact that when I google for drivers for AMD Radeon HD 8400, I see different versions for it and different dates. Even some drivers for 8400 have been released in 2015 but I guess they aren't right for me. Hopefully the one I got on my device right now is the right one for me. Next time I get a BSOD and someone tells me to go to amd.com to get new drivers, I'll just tell them that doesn't work and I'll just uninstall and reinstall from windows update or see if windows have any more updates since the last one.

Lix81:

Speaking from bad experience, HP has a LOT of customized hardware in their PCs and, in general, going to other sites to get drivers is nearly always a bad idea -- especially in the case of AMD drivers. While the model number for the AMD video chipset may appear to be the same, that's no guarantee that the drivers from AMD will work on the HPs -- quite the opposite!

Checking the HP site, it does not list video drivers for your PC for Windows 8 -- I don't know why. But, it does list them for Windows 8.1 -- and those are the ones you should try.

But AMD, while they make good drivers, makes a crappy installer -- which is so bad, that AMD even provides their own utility to remove their driver stuff. The link is here: AMD Clean Uninstall Utility

Please run the AMD clean up tool BEFORE installing any other AMD drivers.

And after that, try the Win8.1 drivers from the HP site.

Good Luck

Actually, I did. It caused flickering and this message:
Untitled.jpg

This is the version that caused that problem that I had to get rid of it before windows update installed version 13.301.1001.0:
2.jpg

Everything you said, I wished I had known about that before getting all those BSODs. The people who told me to just keep going to amd.com never gave me the impression that they were that bad. Some of those people are on this forum, actually. Oh, and I do always use the AMD uninstall drivers utility.
