HP Office Jet V40 Printing partial pages, OS Win8 64Bit

Hello.

I am using an HP Office Jet V40 Printer on my Laptop which runs Windows 8. Ive recently bought new ink for it and aligned the ink (and by recent i mean last night). I test the ink cartridges and the printer prints the pages fine. Full pages. However when i go to print some homework I have typed up ready to be printed, it prints a partial page, whether its 7/8 of the page. 1/2, or 1/4 of the page. It rarely prints a full page, so repeatedly gambling is a waste of ink and paper for me. I researched this and tried finding an answer on my own. I dont know if its the printer. Ive used this printed on my older laptop for many things successfully, that had Windows 7 Home Professional on it fine. I think in the past, ever since I started using this printer with my Windows 8 Laptop it's been bugging out. I cannot remember since before these last two days i havent used this printer in a long time. But, could anyone probably figure out how to fix this issue for me? I'll be typing a lot of things so i'd like to try and get it all done with this printer.

Also. Sorry if I posted this in the wrong section. I believe it may be a driver issue, and when I saw hardware I assumed a printer topic can fit in here. if its in the wrong section, if you could move it to the proper section it'd help. My apologies in advance.

Thank you in advance!

Hi when you put it onto this laptop you have now is it wifi or cable?
Did you have a disc that came with it ?
Have installed the latest drivers for that model to work with windows 8?
What you can try is shut printer down, go to control panel, Program and features, find your printer and uninstall everything with HP against it.
Restart your laptop then if you have a disc run it until you are told to turn on your printer,
If no disc then go to Devices and if cable make sure it is connected, then click find my device.
Windows should scan and find it and upload the drivers and software for it.
Hope that helps you

The printer is connected to my laptop by cable.
I do not have a disc for it.
I dont recall installing any new drivers recently, however when i use the HP Printer Help program (the one that checks for the latest drivers lol), it says that my printer has the latest driver already.
Explain what you mean by uninstall everything HP related? To the printer or all HP programs in general?

Anything that is connected with the printer
So when you reinstall it plug the cable into the usb drive with the printer switched on.
Then once it has been found just follow what ever comes up if it comes up do you have a disc click no
Then do you want windows to try and find the latest drivers for your device, or search for them yourself/
Windows 10 will either install them its self or go and get them from the HP site
see how that goes

What software are you using to type of the homework? What happens when you print to PDF? I finally gave up on buying Inkjet's. By the time it got to where you can buy a Laser for the same price as two ink cartridges, it outweighs the reason to keep using the Inkjet. We hardly print, but always scanning. But having the Laser makes things a lot easier, without having to deal with bad cartridges or dried up cartridges.

Looks like it is the Windows Spooler and the device software that is causing the issue. It is going back as far as 2010 for what you are experiencing. OfficeJet v40 printing parital pages - HP Support Forum - 1182953

Have you tried updating the USB drivers for your computer? That worked for the person who posted at. OfficeJet V40xi prints partial pages only with Windows 7 - HP Support Forum - 256947

broe23 - Im using Microsoft Office Word 2010. I didnt try from other programs/formats. I may consider buying a new printer, this one is rather old, but i'd have to save up for it, Im not sure why it doesnt work normally now. It did for the past 2-3 years that i had it in my possession. I cant find an update for the drivers for the printer. So i wouldnt know how to do it.

htcone - what type of programs would i be looking to delete? are you able to like name any in example?

I have the Brother HL-2280DW. I did not even realize when I bought it, that it did not have iOS printing capabilities, So I ended up getting a Lantronix xPrintserver Home to handle that.

The printer is quick and with the iPhone app, I can scan in and then paste the pdf to a fax or email from the phone.

I use it as a Wifi printer, which makes it even better.

There is no help, because HP no longer has supported that printer since before 2010. Time to get a new one.

I have seen a similar issue with an older printer/all-in-one and a new computer, turned out the printer could not work with USB 3.0 ports on the computer, lost communication with it, changed the cable to a USB 2.0 port and all was good.

Usually machines will have both a USB 2.0 port and a USB 3.0 port, maybe 2 or more of each. On my USB 3.0 ports the center part is blue while the USB 2.0 ports are black, cables have a matching color. Frequently a USB 3.0 port will 'fall back' to USB 2.0 compatibility but if that does not happen and you do not have USB 2.0 ports you will need a newer printer. The downside of Notebooks/Laptops is there's usually nothing one can do to change hardware except for the few models that can have the video adapter changed. Most can have the RAM/memory upgraded and the HDD or SSD changed if needed but that doesn't speak to your issue. I've not yet seen a USB 3.0 adapter to USB 2.0.

I work with HP Printers for a living. I normally work with just the laser types, but a lot of the same troubleshooting that works for the lasers often works for the inkjets as well.

Ive seen this issue with laser types and the most common issues are either a firmware issue or a driver issue, and sometimes a software compatability error. Ive never heard of an issue like this with using a USB 3 port as most of them have a USB 2 compatability mode but it is possible.

From what I am seeing in this thread, I am going to effort that it is a firmware problem caused by incompatability with the OS or software you are using since it is an older printer. There are certain models out there that just simply are not compatible with certain versions of Windows and there is nothing that can be done about it, for example with the Color LaserJet 3600 and Windows 7 or newer. Unfortunately likely they only thing you will be able to do is to purchase a newer model.

Alright, thanks for both of your replies.

Just a thought, if i printed from my old Netbook which was Windows 7 do you think it'd work? I used to print from it just fine before i bought this laptop in the past. I'll consider buying a newer printer eventually however.

I had an old HP Printer, of a similar age, supposedly compatible with Windows 8.1 but there was no full feature driver, just the basic driver within Windows 8.1. or from HP, useful features like ink volume were just not available. It worked fine but used too much ink.

I just bought a new one almost exactly the same with network/wireless connection options. Cost less than a set of cartridges for the old one.
It is hardly 'green' throwing away a perfectly good printer, but what else can you do. Don't bother with 'maybes', I used my old printer on USB3 ports, not a problem.
