4 pin power supply problem

    4 pin power supply problem


    a friend of mine hand me his system unit to reformat. when i get home i back up all his data in D:\. i winrar his 40+gb data into 7gb/ part cuz i only have 2 8gb usb drive so 40/7=6 parts aprox. when the compresion is in part 4, the system unit starting to warm for 3 hours. the compresion is in the last part, which is part 6 when sudenly the system unit is dead. its like a brownout. i press power on but avail. i dismantle the sys unit and it smels like ironing clothes and its very HOT. i leave it for 30 mins and put back the parts (not hot anymore), the heatsink spins but no visual on monitor. when i look back the board. the 4pin (i dont know what it is called but it has 2yellow and 2 black wire) is not connected. when i connect the 4 pin, the heatsink wil not spin. please help me fix this. im not into hardware.

    whats the appropriate solution for this problem? hoping for your kind help.

    EDIT: The board is GeForce6100PM-M2 v2.0 the heat sink has a stikcer of amd and i cant determine the powersupply cus it not the usual location. its power supply is below the hdd.

    im afraid that the mobo has the problem.

    I was gonna suggest to use another power supply and noticed you've already done that. So yes, I think the MB is fried.

    is there a way to tweak the MB to work again?
    cant afford to buy a new one. just a student wanting some extra cash for school. hehe. i hope the owner wouldnt get mad @ me. BTW tnx for the help. appreciate it.

    You can try to take the whole MB out of the case and test again to make sure that it is not shorted. If it does not work then you'd have to replace the MB. I don't think you can find any where that they can do MB repair. It would cost a lot more and time to do this kind of job.

    UPDATE: HMOG! when i take the MB out. I just found out that the foam (What type of foam is that? What is it called?) is melted.

    Question. Why do they put the foam? is it necessary? The foam melted in the MB, does the MB has a chance to function again?
