The disk on my old computer where I keep all of my work files and well as other data, games, videos, etc. is not opening. When I double click the drive (S: ) in My Computer I get the error:

"S:\ is not accessible.
The file or directory is corrupted or unreadable"

So I ran ChkDsk on it. First with F/ then again with R/

Both times I get the same errors.

C:\WINDOWS\system32>chkdsk S: /F
The type of the file system is NTFS.
Volume label is SEAGATE.

Stage 1: Examining basic file system structure ...

File record segment 4 is unreadable.

File record segment 5 is unreadable.

File record segment 6 is unreadable.

File record segment 7 is unreadable.

239680 file records processed.

File verification completed.

888 large file records processed.

4 bad file records processed.
An unspecified error occurred (6e74667363686b2e 2d0).

Anyone have any other suggestions?

It's running Win 8.1, the drive is a 1TB Seagate barracuda.

I'm trying that now but it seems it's not free. It's a trial and will only recover 100MB of data without paying. it also talks about the drive being RAW and converting it to NTFS, but my drive is already NTFS.

There is a free Windows data recovery app known as "recuva". You could try that.

The best data recovery app I've used is Active@File Recovery Pro. It's not free but the trial version will let you search the drive and you will then be able to see what it finds -- before purchasing it.

Thanks Mark. I'm trying stuff but I basically have no money right now. If nothing else I should get paid in a couple weeks so I can buy something

Hmm I'm using Recuva now but I suspect that it's giving me files that have been deleted and it's just undeleting them. Most of them list their path as "Recycle Bin".
