Just bought new External Drive but 300mb is used??

Just wanted to get some reasoning behind this..

Is it normal for 300mb to be used on a completely new drive?? just literally plugged it in 1st now..

I guess I should just format it again..

Windows infrastructuring & housekeeping; can't add furnishings into a house until the infrastructure is in place. As you add "furnishings," Windows housekeeping will hopefully accurately keep track of everything going in, staying in, going out and so on.

300mb is alot of 1st time internal housekeeping..

I think i'll format this drive and then see all the sudden that 300mb is gone..

328 MB on a 4.54 TB drive is a totally trivial amount of disk space.

The space shown is correct in how Windows sees the drive in real hard drive space. You have to remember that the "reserved" space is used by the drive to move info around, in case it encounters bad sectors.

No! That is NOT normal! Not for a brand new blank drive. Only when you install an operating system on it should you get a "System Reserved" partition.

You did not get a "new" drive!

External drive in Installation & Setup
I know there is no such thing as a dumb question, but I have one that might come close. Can Windows 8 be installed on an external drive via a USB cable? I have an external drive that I use for backup. If it would work, I would create a new volume on it and install on that.
