Is there any software/bulkware on it. Some companies, like CNMemory put trialware like BullGaurd or installers on the disk. The 1st thing I always do, is a quick format to either NTFS or FAT32(depends on what I need the ext. HDD for).

Hey, I forgot about extra stuff on hard-drives, thanks for the reminder! Say, if the user's OS needs NTFS, NTFS-reformatting the HD will become necessary, correct?

If you want to use GPT partitioning you should.

though I do appreciate all your responses..

    guys... look

    1. I bought a 5 terabyte external slow "external" hard drive... Seagate.. ok

    2. It is to be used only for "external" storage.. not installing any OS!..

    3. When I plugged it in, I saw 300mb used already.. no folders.. just the recycle and systeminfo folder..

    4. I reformatted to EX-fat and then it was 0 used space..

    5. when I reformatted back to NTFS it then was 300mb used again..

Now you can go at it!..

    (I have pictures if needed..)

There will always be some capacity lost in the partitioning and formatting process. "just the recycle and systeminfo folder" do take up some room even though they may be empty. The so-called 'loss' of 300MB on a 5TB HDD is negligible. 5GB = 5,242,880MB [approximately]

Whether it's negligible isn't the question. Why is it there is the question. And it is only there when formatted NTFS, again why?

Well to see if any files or folders are there(put by windows), brooksndun you could try looking at it using 7zip's file manager, it shows just about anything on a disk(not necessarily open, but shows).

If formatted by Windows 7 or above, Windows will create this partition but there should not be any files in it. It you ever plan on using BitLocker, you should keep it. It only 300Mb.

The drive in question is an external drive, there was no mention of a partition.

Ok Ill check with 7zip file manager..

but yeah there is no windows os or partition for windows... I just formatted NTFS with the format (right click the drive and select format)

guys, Like I already said, I format EX-fat and its 0 used space.. I format NTFS.. 300mb used..

obviously NTFS needs to write something for 5TB.. but 300 for a not-ever-used New external drive seems odd and I just don't know how the NTFS file system works..
