Not sure if this is the right place to write about this problem, but anyways.
So, my asus notebook (x550c) has been running weird for past months, i've reinstalled the windows many times, but i found the problem. The HDD is dead. When i was installing windows, it showed me an error saying : cannot be installed on this disk, the disk may fail soon.
There probbly is no other way on fixing this, than buying a new hard drive right?
is there a specific hdd that i need to buy ?
please help.:)

I agree with mysery126. Also, a quick call to the store or even a google search of your computer model # will provide you with the correct HDD .

If you do need to replace it, there's no need to call the store to find the right hdd. Any 2.5" SATA drive will work in your laptop. You may even want to take this opportunity to get a larger drive or even consider an ssd.

Yes, any 2.5" SATA will work. If the 1TB drive was more than you need then you could go smaller as well. As I mentioned previously, you could also go with an ssd that will give you a nice performance boost (especially boot up).

One caveat about the statement "any 2.5" SATA", I'm referring to currently manufactured drives here. If you buy an older drive, it will be 12.5mm thick whereas currently manufactured drives are 9.5mm thick. The thinner drive will fit all laptops (a spacer may be needed for older laptops) while the thicker will only fit older drives so do make sure the one you buy is 9.5mm thick.

EDIT: The thicknesses above should be 9.5mm and 7mm. Regardless, the thinner drive fits all laptops while the thicker will physically only fit older laptops.

I wouldn't be so quick to say any 2.5 inch SATA drive will work. There are 9.5 mm and 7 mm drives. Some laptops and tablets will only accept the thin 7 mm drives. A 9.5 mm drive will not fit in my wife's Acer laptop for example. My ASUS laptop though will take either thickness drive. I just have to use a spacer for the 7 mm drives.

The first one you listed will work for sure since it's thickness is listed as 7mm. The 2nd is listed as 9mm thick so I can't say whether it will fit or not and the 3rd doesn't list the thickness. I would pass on the 3rd just because of the lack of details in the Product Description. Check the dimensions given in the Product Details section.

BTW, I actually gave the wrong dimensions in my previous post, should have been 9.5mm and 7mm but what I said is accurate, currently manufactured drives are the thinner drives and will work in new and old laptops while the thicker drives will only physically fit in older laptops. As long as you stick with the 7mm drives, it will fit.

cheers, strollin, one more thing, but if go with ssd? what kind of ssd i need?

SSD drives are SATA drives and are physically identical to standard SATA drives. Same connectors and mounting holes. They are just lighter and have no moving parts. And a hell of a lot faster than a standard spinner drive. Especially 5400 RPM laptop drives.

:ditto: Most current drives are the thin 7 mm drives. Large capacity drives may be 9.5 mm just because they have to be to get two platters inside. All the 7 mm SSD's I've ordered lately have come with the spacers to fit them in 9.5 mm bays. If you laptop is a slim design it more than likely has the 7 mm bay in it. I mentioned it because it would suck to buy a new drive and then find out it won't fit.
