Solved Laptop gets overheat while playing games..about 95C

I have applied thermal paste several times, recently applied shin-etsu thermal compound. I have checked the fan. Its dust free and is functioning properly. Tested the temperature with various softwares, such as HWInfo64, HWmonitor and GPU-Z. The temperature reaches ~95C while playing games. No FPS drops, I get very good FPS with games such as assassins creed unity, GTA V, Bioshock infinite. The surface above the touchpad doesn't feel too hot, but the surface just above the fan(near the side of keyboard) feels hot. Never experienced BSOD while playing games. Sometimes the temperature reach 98C but the laptop never shuts down. Room temperature is 38C right now.

I have all the drivers installed up to date. My CPU consumes no more than 50-60% while playing games. With GPU-Z, I can see that the nvidia gpu doesn't get overheat. It stays ~78C while playing games, but when I click on the intel gpu 4600, it shows about 93+ celcius.

I use nvidia gpu for games(Checked it with nvidia control panel), and intel gpu for other things. Its set in the nvidia control panel.

Today I performed another test using prime95. Ran it for about 1 hour with no issues.

I think the fan is not blowing at a high speed while playing games. Today, while using prime95, the fan was blowing at a high speed. I don't get this amount of speed while running games.

Edit- When the laptop is in idle state, and the charger is not plugged in, the temperature is around 48-50C(intel gpu core clock speed 600MHZ). when i plug in the adapter, the temperature is ~60C(1200MHZ).

Note that my laptop has turboboost(2.5GHZ to 3.5GHZ). When I plug in the adapter, it goes up to 3.2 GHZ from 2.4 GHZ

Please ignore my bad english. Thank you.

Room temp of 98C? I think you mean 98F. If ambient temp is that warm it will be very hard for the laptop to stay cool. You need a good cooling pad.

I figured it was a typo. :)

About all you can do is try a cooling pad: Top 5 Best Laptop Cooling Pads | Heavy.com

Thank you very much for your time sir. I think I have the 5th one.

Imgur

I started using it today, and it reduced the temperature by 2-3 degrees. My maximum temperature is still 97-98 C. Average temperature is ~90C.

Shouldn't the laptop auto-shut down at such high temperature? I had overheating issue with my previous laptop (dell 1564). Whenever it was getting overheat, the processes start to hang, laptop takes a lot of time to cool down... etc.

But with my current laptop, no such issues. Games run for hours without lagging, without laptop shutting down, etc. And when i exit the game, it cools down within minutes.

Any other advice?

Sorry, I don't really have a fix for you then. That is awfully hot for it to be running. You say you re-applied the thermal compound, hopefully it was done correctly.

A room temperature of 38C is going to make it very hard for a laptop with inherent limited cooling to stay cool. Most laptops have very minimal cooling and it may be it simply can not keep itself cooler at that room temperature. Wish I had a better answer.

I am surprised it is not shutting down or giving BSOD though. The T-Junction for that CPU is 100C so maybe it hasn't shutdown because you haven't quite hit it. Not good to be getting that close to it regularly though. Will definitely probably shorten the life.

First off you should post in the Asus forums 2nd off since your playing games on a non G notebook you might want to check out the ROG forums NON-ROG ASUS Notebooks. You'll find more specific help there.
Your temps do sound high but not to the point of Throttling. Your Ambient temp is also high at 38C it would be normal if in a A/C environment say 28 C your temps would drop 10C or so too.
Mostly were repasting with IC Diamond now with our G notebooks seem to work getting us lower temps.
Asus does not let us control fan speeds on there notebooks so the BIOS has full control of the fan speed which in turn is controlled by the CPU Temp. Higher CPU Temp Faster Fan Speeds If that's not happening it a hardware issue. You could flash a newer BIOS that may help? Asus Support Downloads

Regarding the applying thermal compound...

There is only one thing I noticed which is weird. The nvidia GPU shows maximum temperature of 80C in gpu-z. The intel gpu shows 95C.
And when I separate the heatpipe to apply new thermal compound, or to check whether everything is alright, I see that the thermal compound that's in between the nvidia gpu and heatpipe is exactly in same condition as it was when I applied the compound.

But the thermal paste that I applied in between intel and the heatpipe is displaced. And its displaced every time I check it. Do you think I should loose the screws thats up above the heatpipe?

My CPU doesn't take much load while playing games.(I can see it in the task manager). I can open a lot of things while playing games, such as chrome, firefox, hwmonitor, gpu-z, and the normal background processes. No FPS drop, no lag or hang while playing games. I contacted asus before posting here. They asked me to update bios. I did, but it didn't change anything.

What do you mean by temperature throttling? Is it same as the word "LOG" in coretemp? I have seen the LOG word while using coretemp.

The only way to fix this issue is to use the device in an air conditioned space. Using it in a warm environment, causes very short lifespan.

It really will not change the fact that the room is hot that you are using the computer in. You are basically baking your laptop to an early death.

yes sir, i will keep that in mind. my laptop is 9 months old.

its pretty hot around this time of the year(summer ends in 2-3 days, that's when i will test it again:)). the temperature was 44C hot some days ago. i can do nothing about it except not playing games during these days.

sorry for my bad english and thank you for the feedback.

We Americans, and some other people, are a bit spoiled thinking most people have air conditioning. I don't envy you those temps without it. I hope you have cooler days ahead. :)

When it gets hot in the room and none of the extra coolers work, consider reducing the maximum processor state of the used power plan:

cpu-power.png

By default it's set to 100% and allows the CPU in turbo mode that easily exceeds 3Ghz depending on cpu model.
Here as an example it's set to 80% which slighty reduces performance, disabling turbo mode but considerably reduces temperature as well.

Tip:
Play with the value: 70% - 80% - 90% as long as the cpu has a clock step for the value and the game performance is acceptable to you.
Create a new power plan named something like 'Cooler' based on your current power plan and set the processor state there, this way you can switch back easily when you need to.

Good luck.

    That's basically it.
Some people have used the Gel Packs inside of a laptop cooler, to help keeping it cool. Some people have also set up on the cheap A/C units, by having a recirc pump pushing Ice cold water through a radiator that used to be a heater core for a car, and have a fan blow across the core, to push cool air.

I have been in the same situation of being in a mobile home with no a/c. During the day, it would get up to 110 deg. Fahrenheit. At that time I was used to it, because of being deployed around Central America on the ship I was stationed on.

There are plenty of sites that show you how to build a laptop chiller, that slides in on the side where the heat sink for the fan is located. All it takes is ingenuity to come up with one that will work for you.

I noticed that power saver mode reduces clock speed. At that time, if i play games(with adapter disconnected), the temperature doesn't get above 80C. Checking the clock speed in HWinfo64 shows lower clock speed(no turboboost).

if i plug in the charger, no matter which power plan i use, the clock speed increases and reaches ~95C, irrespective of the game.

i took the laptop to an AC room today. and played a game for about 1 hour. strangely, there was not even 1C drop in temperature. it still showed ~95C. apparently i have used all temperature measuring softwares, and all show the same thing.

its funny, 95C never feels "that" hot when i touch the surface above the fan, both in non AC and AC rooms( in the non AC room it feels slightly hotter than the AC room). and when i check the nvidia gpu temperaure, it shows maximum 81C both in non AC and AC rooms. the intel gpu temperature averages at 95C. in the AC room, my touchpad(ice cool technology) was still feeling cool when the temperature was showing 95C.

when i exit the game, the temperature suddenly drops to 70(within 2-3 seconds) and returns to normal temperature very quickly.

prior to posting here, i talked to someone who also bought the same model laptop, and he was also getting high temperatures.. my laptop is 9 months old, he bought his laptop after me. he ran the game for a very short period and he was getting 92C. is it a software related bug? because the laptop actually doesn't feel that hot

K450JN has some pretty tough specs.

But unavailable power options it's weird, so far I've never encountered it. Must be the 'new' way they use on some new machines... somehow the options are hidden but should exist.

- Check other power plans, beginning with the standard ones from Windows.

- Have you clicked the 'change settings that are currently unavailable' option?

- You can also try to import my 'Cooler' - 80% cpu power plan from attachment to see if it works.

How to import a power plan and more is found here:
Power Plans - Export and Import - Windows 7 Help Forums
I've exported using the same tutorial.

Cheers,
Hopachi
